Carnell scores two goals as UNCG blanks Wofford 2-0 in women's soccer action

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, SC Reigning SoCon Player of the Year Amy Carnell netted a pair of first half goals as the UNC Greensboro women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games with an impressive 2-0 road shutout over Wofford Tuesday evening at Synder Field.

The 2-0 win marks the eighth consecutive game the Spartans have shutout Wofford on the soccer field.  The last time the Terriers scored a goal against the Spartans was during the 1998 season, a game in which UNCG won 3-1 in the SoCon Tournament.

Carnell quickly put the Spartans (9-5-1, 5-2-1 SoCon) out in front 1-0 in the 18th minute when the senior connected for her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Karla Davis.  The reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, Davis fired a service into the Terrier box where Carnell corralled the loose ball and beat Wofford keeper Bernie Sikes to give the Spartans the 1-0 advantage.

The duo hooked up again in the 39th minute, scoring the game's final goal on a play much similar to the first.  Carnell, the recipient of another Davis corner kick, played the ball off her chest to her feet and redirected a shot past Sikes for her second goal of the contest.  The goal was Carnell's 32nd score in a UNCG uniform, catapulting her into a tie for fourth place on the school's all-time goals scored list.

UNCG held a 9-1 shot advantage and a 5-0 corner kick edge in the first half.

In the second half, UNCG's league-leading defense stood true to form as the Spartans limited Wofford to but three shots and only one corner kick.  The Spartans outshot Wofford 10-4 and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks for the game.

Senior keeper Jennifer Stillman collected two saves en route to recording her sixth shutout of the season.  The Randolph, NJ native is now third in the conference in blankings and holds the school's all-time career record with 24.

UNCG returns to the field Friday evening when the Spartans welcome The Citadel to the UNCG Soccer Field for a 7 pm matchup.  Prior to the contest, UNCG will recognize its eight seniors as a part of Senior Night.
