GREENSBORO, NC – Old Dominion took five of the first seven matches, as the Monarchs defeated UNC Greensboro, 20-15, in a non-conference wrestling match Thursday evening in Fleming Gym. Old Dominion improves to 8-5 overall, while the Spartans drop to 8-3.

The Monarchs opened the dual by winning the first two bouts of the match to open up an 8-0 lead. Starting at 133, ODU freshman B.J. Compton recorded a 17-2 technical fall victory over Chris Bencivenga. Next at 141, junior Shanon Slack knocked off David Johnson by a 5-3 score.

UNCG cut the Monarch lead to 8-6, after victories by sophomore Andrew Krieger (149) over Hunter Davenport, 5-3, and senior O.T. Johnson (157) over Nick Pullano (7-5).

Old Dominion struck back at 165 lbs, beginning a run of three straight victories as the Monarchs extended their lead to 20-6. Robby Gosnell defeated Mark Ring, 4-3, while at 174 lbs., John Adams edged Scott Fisher, 8-7. Adam Wright (184) closed out the ODU run with a pin of Freddy Valoy at 6:45.

The Spartans closed out the dual by winning the final three bouts. Senior Charles Jones, wrestling up at 197 lbs., easily defeated Shea Smith by a 9-2 decision. Sophomore Daren Burns (HWT), also wrestling up a weight class, defeated John Dolida, 6-0. Burns, the product of Catawba, NC, improves his overall record to 20-4 on the season, 10-1 in dual matches. In the night's final bout at 125, freshman Joe Kemmerer, ranked 15^th in the country by Intermat, defeated 14^th-ranked Christian Staylor, 3-2. Kemmerer, the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Month for January, improves his record to 23-3, 11-0 dual matches.   

UNCG returns to action on Sunday, February 6 in Fleming Gym against SoCon rival Chattanooga. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
