BIRMINGHAM, AL Hermann Award candidate Randi Patterson had a goal and an assist on Sunday to lead UNC Greensboro to a 3-0 win over Birmingham Southern and the tournament championship at the UAB Men's Soccer Classic.
Patterson, a junior from
Hackensack, NJ who is one of 25 players named as a candidate for college soccer's top honor, staked UNCG to a 1-0 lead in a hurry on Sunday. He scored his seventh goal of the season and the 37th of his career just 39 seconds into the match to give the Spartans an early lead.
The score remained the same until the 58:57 mark when Jokull Elisabetarson scored unassisted to give UNCG a 2-0 lead. The native of Iceland scored his second goal of the season.
Patterson would help out on UNCG's third and final goal, feeding David Grayson for his first goal of the season at the 78:52 mark.
Patterson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, recording two goals and an assist in the two matches. Elisabetarson also earned all-tournament honors, along with David Worthen and Jamie Carlson.
Jay Benfield recorded four saves in goal for UNCG (4-2) to earn his third shutout in six matches this season.
