GREENSBORO, NC – In a meeting of Southern Conference frontrunners, UNC Greensboro scored three goals in a span of 9:05 midway through the first half on its way to a 4-2 win over Furman in women's soccer action on Saturday night.
“We really played a heck of a game tonight,” said UNCG coach Eddie Radwanski, whose team moved to 8-7-2 overall and remained unbeaten in league play at 7-0-1. “It was senior night, so our girls were pretty emotional before the game with eight seniors. But they used that emotion in a positive way and came out strong right from the start.”
Jessica Patterson opened the scoring at 20:06. After a throw-in by Karla Davis was played back out of the box, Davis served the ball back in to Shannon Donovan. The ball wound up in a crowd off of Donovan's foot and Patterson knocked it home for a 1-0 lead.
Just 1:21 later, Deven Beachum teamed up with Donovan for a two-goal advantage. Donovan had a free kick from 30 yards out and played it into the middle of the box. Beachum, a fifth-year senior from Raleigh, NC, went up in a crowd to get her head on it and into the goal.
Then, at 29:11, Kelly Attayek scored her first of two goals on the night. Donovan headed the ball to Beachum who plays it to Attayek where she controlled it and hit a shot just inside the top of the box from 15 yards out.
Attayek scored again at 65:45. A misplay by Furman's keeper and a defender left the ball loose near the 18-yard-line. Attayek was able to leap over the two Lady Paladins and chip in an easy one for her fifth goal of the season.
Furman (9-7-1, 5-2-1) scored twice in the final four minutes to avoid the shutout. Anna Betton scored on a loose ball from five yards out at 86:18 to get the Lady Paladins on the scoreboard. Kate Myatt scored with five seconds left when a failed clear fell at her feet and she hit a shot from 20 yards out just under the crossbar.
UNCG returns to action on Friday when it travels to The Citadel for a 3 pm match. A win on Friday would wrap-up the Southern Conference regular season title.
