GREENSBORO, NC Sophomore Wes McCall picked up his first win of the season as UNC Greensboro claimed a three-game series victory with a 7-4 win over Albany Sunday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
McCall (1-3) allowed two runs in the top of the first, but settled in nicely and surrendered just two hits over the next six innings. The Gastonia, NC native allowed just four hits while striking out seven and walking just two.
Albany (4-12) starter Mark Suchowiecki took the loss after allowing five unearned runs on seven hits in six innings on the hill.
The Great Danes struck for two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single from catcher Tom Hill and a bases loaded walk that scored Hill.
Suchowiecki held the Spartans offense at bay for the first four frames, but UNCG erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a three-run lead. Brandon Harvey and Sean Snell reached base on back-to-back errors on the Albany infield before Adam Deleo laced a two-run triple to right-centerfield to tie the game at two.
Jermaine Mitchell added an RBI single in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 14 games and Guy Welsh added two RBI of his own with a single to centerfield to cap the inning.
Welsh collected a third RBI in the seventh with another single and Logan Smith picked up an RBI with a single up the middle to score Welsh.
Albany scored two runs in the top of the eighth to get within three runs on a pair of home runs, but junior Brandon Harvey pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win for the homestanding Spartans.
Greg Feltes, Welsh, Harvey and Deleo each had two hits for the Spartans while Welsh finished with a game-high three RBI.
UNCG returns to action Tuesday when the Spartans welcome Princeton to Greensboro for a two-game series. First pitch between the Spartans and Tigers is schedule for 6 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
