GREENSBORO, NC – Gina Om's goal in second half lifted Virginia Tech to a 1-0 victory over UNC Greensboro in women's soccer action at the UNCG Women's Soccer Classic.
The two teams played a defense dominated first half. Both the Spartans and the Hokies had good looks on the goal but the defenses stayed tough and the teams went into halftime deadlocked in a scoreless tie.
Virginia Tech gained the 1-0 lead in the 61st minute. Freshman Julian Johnson threw the ball in to Laurie Beth Puglisi. Puglisi then made the short pass to Om who slipped the ball past Spartan keeper Katherine Ryan.
UNCG fought hard and had good looks on goal including two great attempts in the last 45 seconds of the game. Junior Karla Davis sent the corner kick into the box where Spartan freshman Kelly Attayek knocked the ball toward the goal. Hokie goalkeeper, Mallory Soldner blocked Attayek's attempt. However, UNCG's Jennifer Bronson was there for the rebound and attempted to get it past Soldner but was unable to get the game-tying goal into the net.
"It was a good game. Two very good teams going at it," head coach Eddie Radwanski stated, "Virginia Tech took advantage of an opportunity but I appreciate the fight and spirit we had at the end. We'll come back and get the victory on Sunday."
Ryan recorded seven saves for the Spartans in 90 minutes of play. Soldner had four saves for the Hokies.
UNCG (0-3-0) will face off with the Miami Hurricanes (3-0-0) in the final game of the UNCG Classic on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
