ELON, NC Senior Deven Beachum scored her second goal of the season to give UNC Greensboro the 1-0 win over Elon in the Spartans' Southern Conference opener at Elon in women's soccer action.
The Spartans dominated the first stanza by outshooting the
Phoenix 4-1 and keeping the ball on the Elon end of the pitch for most of the half. Senior Shannon Donovan had two good looks including a shot that was picked up by Elon keeper Lizz Johnson. Both teams went into the break in a 0-0 tie.
Beachum would break the 0-0 tie in the 82nd minute and score the game-winning goal for UNCG. Beachum received a pass from Jamie Corti and dribbled the ball up the field past two Elon defenders and blasted it 12 yards out past Johnson to give the Spartans the one goal advantage.
Elon fought hard in the second half but UNCG put on a strong defensive stand to come away with the 1-0 victory.
“It's good to get a win in the conference,” stated UNCG head coach Eddie Radwanski, “We played well in the first half and Elon came out tough in the second. The team responded well and they deserved the win.”
UNCG controlled the match on both ends of the pitch. The Spartans outshot the Phoenix 10-3 and also had a 7-4 corner kick advantage. Donovan and Beachum each finished with three shots on the night.
The Spartans will host a pair of SoCon matches this upcoming weekend for UNCG's homecoming festivities. On Friday, UNCG takes on Wofford at 7 pm. Western Carolina comes to town on Sunday for a 2 pm match up.
