GREENSBORO, NC UNC Greensboro scored twice in the first 13 minutes of the match and freshman goalkeeper Nate Berry made it hold up for his first collegiate shutout as the Spartans handed Campbell its first loss of the season, 2-0, in men's soccer action on Tuesday night.
Playing without five key players, including four starters, due to red cards issued in its last match, UNC Greensboro showed no ill effects and came out with a fury on Wednesday night. Travis Young scored just
1:57 into the contest to give the Spartans an early 1-0 lead. After a Campbell defender's clearing attempt went amiss, Young gathered the loose ball and fired a shot from 20 yards out. The transfer from Kentucky found the bottom left corner of the net for his first goal as a Spartan and a one-goal lead.
The early domination by UNCG continued as Michael FitzGerald made it 2-0 with his team-leading third goal of the season. Jokull Elisabetarson hit a ball from 40 yards out on the rightside, which found FitzGerald in the box. FitzGerald then headed it into the back of the goal to make it 2-0 lead.
UNCG outshot Campbell 11-2 in the first half and held a 16-14 advantage for the game, although Campbell only had six shots that were actually on net. Berry recorded five saves for his first shutout as a Spartan.
Campbell (2-1-0) was trying to start a season by winning its first three matches for the first time since 1988. The Camels were ranked seventh in today's NSCAA South Region rankings, while UNCG was tied for 10th.
UNCG returns to action on Friday when it hosts UAB in the first round of the UNCG Men's Soccer Classic at 7:30 pm.
