GREENSBORO, NC Seven different Spartans found the back of the net in Thursday night's 7-0 shutout against The Citadel at UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, UNC Greensboro extended its win streak to seven and moved its Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 19.
Junior Heather Mitrisin began the Spartan scoring drive with a long pass to senior Karla Davis on the left side. Davis crossed the ball right in front of the far post to find a waiting Kristin Player. The freshman forward fired the ball just inside the right post for her ninth goal of the season.
A little over two minutes later, freshman Jenn Partenheimer gave a quick pass to Mitrisin from 20 yards out. With The Citadel's keeper Lisa Wilson out of position, Mitrisin snuck past to score on the open goal. This was her second goal of the season.
UNCG's third goal came from an off-target shot. Freshman Tina Karam put up a shot that deflected off the crossbar. The rebound bounced in front of the goal and senior Mary Kate Towne got a head on it to put the Spartans up 3-0.
Seventeen and a half minutes and seven shots later, UNCG found the back of the net once again. Sophomore Kelly Attayek crossed the ball into the middle of the box from the left side, Mitrisin grounded the ball, and with a quick flick to Partenheimer, the Spartans were up 4-0.
At the 36-minute mark, freshman Katie Evens landed her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Lauren Lopez crossed the ball to the feet of freshman Katie Jordan in the left corner, Jordan one-touched it to Evans, and Evans nailed the score in from just inside the box.
A little over 14 minutes into the second half, a corner kick from junior Heather Deutschle set up Lopez for a one-touch goal in front of the box; her second of the season.
Attayek closed out the Spartan scoring drive in the 62nd minute with an unassisted goal. The Citadel's Emily Green came out for the one-on-one, but Attayek popped it over her head and into the goal from nearly 25 yards out.
The Spartans held the advantage across the board. They out-shot the Bulldogs 34-1 with 24 shots on goal and also held a 12-3 corner kick advantage.
Freshman keeper Barrie Vogel bumped her record to 2-0-0 and recorded her third shutout of the season. The Citadel's Wilson gathered 10 saves and Green had seven.
“It was a good win,” said head coach Eddie Radwanski. “We were able to get all the girls out there on the field and a lot of them were able to create some excellent opportunities.”
“Now we need to prepare ourselves for Sunday's game. Furman is always a great opponent and we need to get ready for a hard-fought 90 minutes.”
Sophomore Kelly Attayek was named the George Harrison UNCG Player of the Game.
UNCG is now 9-3-1overall and undefeated 6-0-0 in the conference. The Citadel drops to a 3-13-0 overall record and is now 0-6-0 in the SoCon.
The Spartans are back on the road Sunday afternoon as they travel to Greenville, SC to take on the Furman Lady Paladins for a 2pm kickoff at Eugene Stone II Soccer Stadium.
