CHATTANOOGA, TN The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team ended their three-game road swing with a 4-1 win over the Lady Mocs Thursday night in Chattanooga, TN.
The Spartans are now 6-3-1 overall, 3-0-0 in the Southern Conference. With the win, UNCG increased their conference unbeaten streak to sixteen games including three during the SoCon Tournament. The Spartan squad began the streak September 24, 2006 with a 1-0 win over Elon. The Lady Mocs record dropped to 0-6-2, 0-1-1 SoCon overall.
With just under three minutes underway, freshman Kristin Player lit the board for the Spartans with her sixth goal of the season. Player teamed up with sophomore Kelly Attayek in the middle of the box for a two-on-one. Attayek dished off to Player who was able to sneak the ball past Chattanooga's Milla Junni.
The Lady Mocs evened the game at 19:33 as Jessica Dugger threaded the ball to Sara Francescon on the right side. Francescon slipped the ball past UNCG's freshman keeper Barrie Vogel for her third goal of the season.
UNCG took control and solidified a win in the second half. Freshman Jenn Partenheimer started off the three-goal rally after picking off a rebounded ball for her second goal of the season at just under the 60-minute mark.
Player and Attayek connected for the fourth time this season just five minutes after Partenheirmer's goal. Attayek dropped the ball in for Player who fired from the left side into the right corner.
UNCG struck again with just under 11 minutes left as sophomore Lauren Lopez recorded her first goal of the season off a free kick from 25 yards out.
The Spartans finished the game with a 27-3 shot advantage and ousted Chattanooga's one corner kick with 13 of their own.
“I give credit to the girls, they really played some good soccer tonight,” said head coach Eddie Radwanski, “I would have liked to see some of the chances put away quicker, but we did a good job keeping control of the game.”
“I'm happy with this start. It's not easy to start 3-0 in the conference and it's certainly not always easy to get those wins on the road.”
The Spartans are back at home Sunday, October 7 at 2pm as they take on Georgia Southern at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
