BUIES CREEK, NC David Grayson's header 8:39 into the second half was the difference as UNC Greensboro won its third straight and snapped Campbell's four-game winning streak in a 2-1 win over the Camels in UNCG's regular season finale on Wednesday night.
The win for UNCG (9-7-2) guaranteed a winning season for the Spartans, their 29th consecutive dating back to 1979. In addition, it keeps head coach Michael Parker perfect, guaranteeing his 32nd straight winning season. Parker is the winningest coach in Division I, now with 476 wins in his career.
Grayson scored his second goal of the year at 53:39 off a header. After a pass from Jokull Elisabetarson, Tebatso Manyama found Grayson for what would wind up being the difference in the match.
Manyama started the scoring midway through first half with a header of his own. He scored his fourth goal of the season off of Travis Young's cross.
Campbell closed to within one at 64:28 when Pat Danford scored the first goal of the career. Richard Jata placed a corner kick perfectly to Danford's head to cut UNCG's lead in half with 25:32 left.
However, the Spartans held the lead from there as Nate Berry recorded three saves in earning the win. UNCG held an 11-10 advantage in shots on the night. Campbell had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans, who have now won eight in a row over the Camels, will be the No. 3 seed in the Southern Conference Tournament, which gets underway Saturday. UNCG hosts Davidson in a quarterfinal match at UNCG Soccer Stadium at 7 pm Saturday.
