GREENSBORO, NC – Senior right-hander Ryan Falcon allowed just one run and eight hits in eight innings on the hill as the UNC Greensboro baseball team took the 2-1 win in game one of the three-game series with Army on Friday night at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Falcon, the Rougemont, NC native, finished with six strikeouts and no walks for the Spartans, while sophomore Kory Judd recorded the save after pitching one inning of relief.
Army's starter Nick Hill took the loss after recording two runs on seven hits in six innings on the mound. Hill tallied a game-high 10 strikeouts on the night.
The Black Knights (2-5) grabbed the 1-0 lead at the top of the third inning. Infielder J.P. Polchinski advanced to second on a double to right center and continued on to third after Tony Capozzi singled to center. Polchinski rounded home on a groundout by centerfielder Caleb Love to give Army the one run advantage.
UNCG (4-4) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth after tallying two runs. Junior Sean Snell made his way around the bases after recording a double to center and a single by classmate Tim Carrier, tying the game at one apiece. Greg Feltes blasted a double to right to bring Corey Overholtzer, who walked earlier, in for the run and putting the Spartans up 2-1.
Carrier led UNCG by going 2-for-4 from the plate and recording a RBI. Senior Guy Welsh finished 2-for-2 before leaving the game early in the bottom of the fifth.
Capozzi went 2-for-2 for the Black Knights, while Polchinski finished 2-for-3 from the plate.
Game two of the three-game series is set for 1 pm on Saturday at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
