SPARTANBURG, SC – Michael Gilmartin's go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth was enough to drive Wofford to the 9-8 win over UNC Greensboro in game three on Sunday afternoon at Russell C. King Field.
Gilmartin finished 2-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Terriers behind the plate. Reliever Adam Kearney (2-3) picked up the win after scattering five hits and giving up just two runs in 3-1/3 innings of work.
Sophomore Greg Martin (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in 3-1/3 innings on the mound.
Scott Schneider led UNCG from the plate and went 2-for-4 with five RBI, including a grand slam in the sixth. Tim Carrier and Matt Gaski recorded two hits and a RBI each.
UNCG (21-19, 8-7 SoCon) put a run on the board in the top of the second to take an early 1-0 advantage. Schneider sent a single down the rightfield line to score Ricky Orton, who doubled earlier. The Spartans plated another run in the third on a Carrier RBI single up the middle.
Wofford (20-21, 4-11 SoCon) exploded for six runs in the fourth and held a 6-2 lead at the end of the frame. Brandon Waring led off with a hit to left-center and scored two batters later on a Keith Munns single. Adam Wood drove in two runs and after a Terrier groundout, Gilmartin singled to left to score two. Wofford closed out the eight-hit inning with a RBI punch from Sterling Dye.
Schneider tied the game at six a piece in the sixth with his first career grand slam. Carrier was hit by a pitch, Gaski singled and Sean Snell walked before Schneider sent the two-out roundtripper over the rightfield fence, his fourth of the season.
The Terriers responded in the seventh when Gilmartin hit a three-run homer for the 9-6 lead. UNCG fought back in the ninth and scored on a RBI groundout by Corey Overholtzer and a two-out RBI single by Gaski but came up just short as Kearney retired the final batter and secured the win.
The Spartans return to UNCG Baseball Stadium as they host cross-town rival North Carolina A&T on Wednesday at 6 pm.
