Volleyball drops two at Duquesne Invitational

PITTSBURGH, PA The UNC Greensboro volleyball team's road woes continued as they dropped a 3-2 match to Duquesne and a 3-0 match to Bucknell in tournament action at the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational hosted by Duquesne on Saturday.

 

Sophomore Branagan Fuller led UNCG (4-4) in both matches. The Murietta, CA native tallied a team high 19 kills against Duquesne and 12 in the loss to Bucknell. Catherine Hanners again led the way on the defensive end tallying a team-high 25 against Duquesne.

 

The Spartans were taken to a fifth game in the match against host Duquesne. The Dukes jumped out to a commanding 2-0 at the break after winning game one by a score of 30-23 and game two 30-28. The Spartans kept game two close from the opening minutes. The game featured several lead ties but a 3-0 run to close the game gave the Dukes the game by a score of 30-28.

 

UNCG came out strong in the next match and were led by Fuller who played big on the offensive side. The Dukes managed to keep it close but the Spartans used a 5-1 run down the stretch to take the game 30-23. The Spartans continue their comeback with a win in the fourth game.

 

The game was again close throughout and featured nine lead changes. The game was tied at 28 and the Dukes were gaining momentum but the Spartans were able to take the 30-26 victory with back-to-back kills to end the game.

 

In the fifth game the Spartans were on pace with Duquesne but the Dukes were able to take the game, 16-14 after closing with a 5-1 run.

 

In the late game, Bucknell rolled out to a 5 -1 lead but UNCG was able to get back into the game and tie it at seven but after several miscues the Bison rolled to a 30-23 win in game one. Bucknell opened game two on a 4-1 run and seemed poised to take the game easily but UNCG was able to cut the lead to 21-25 but couldn't stop the Bucknell offense and dropped game two 30-28.

 

The third game was close from the opening serve and the score see-sawed in the opening minutes but Bucknell again pulled away. The Spartans clawed back and were able to get within two points at 29-27 but couldn't put it away as Bucknell won the game 30-28.

 

The Spartans continue their road swing when the head to High Point September 5. First serve is at 7 pm.
