Player, Bronson score in UNCG's 2-0 win over Central Michigan

Box Score

GREENSBORO, NC The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team added another win Sunday afternoon as it defeated Central Michigan, 2-0 at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

Both teams got a rather slow start in the first half with each tacking up only one shot. Although the numbers were low, both the Spartans and the Chippewas set themselves up for several scoring opportunities that fell just short.

It was a different story in the second half as both teams came out firing for the back of the net putting up six shots in the first 15 minutes.

UNCG freshman Kristin Player put up the first goal of the game and what turned out to be the game-winner in the 76th minute.  Sophomore Jennifer Bronson found Player off a left side cross just in front of the box to put the Spartans up 1-0. The goal was Player's second.

Less than five minutes later, the Bronson/Player connection got another shot past CMU goalkeeper Shay Mannino. This time it was Player who set up the shot with a nice cross from the right side to Bronson just outside the 18.

UNCG was able to hold off the Chippewas for the remaining 10 minutes to record the 2-0 win.

Freshman Jenn Partenheimer, senior Jessica Patterson, and Bronson each had two shots in the match-up. Senior goalkeeper Katherine Ryan manned the net for the entire 90 minutes and tallied six saves. Ryan is also credited with another shutout. She has tallied eight in her career.

Following the game, head coach Eddie Radwanski had nothing but good to say to his team, “Two and zero on the opening weekend... that's something to be proud of. It's a wonderful way to start the season.”

On the topic of Central Michigan, Radwanski said that he was happy they could play such a difficult team. “CMU is really good to play and it was a tough game.” He went on to say that at times it was a battle of outside factors. “It was a tough game all around. Not only did we have to battle our opponent on the field, but we had to go against the heat as well.”

The Spartans will now have the upcoming week to prepare for the Florida Atlantic Tournament in Boca Raton, FL. After their return, they will have just a few short days before they host No. 1 North Carolina.
