HIGH POINT, NC Jokull Elisabetarson scored twice and Matt Strine added a goal and an assist as UNC Greensboro blanked backyard-rvial High Point, 4-0, in men's soccer action Saturday night.
Chad Janda and Chad Dickerson combined on the shutout for the Spartans (2-1-2). High Point (0-5-1) held a 13-9 advantage in shots, but just one of the Panthers' shots was on goal. The Spartans, meanwhile, had five of their nine shots go on goal and four of them find the back of the net.
The Spartans, who are unbeaten in their last three matches, waisted little time in taking a 1-0 lead. Strine, a redshirt freshman from Spring, TX, scored unassisted from the left side of the box for his first collegiate goal to give UNCG an early lead.
Elisabetarson made it 2-0 when he scored an unassisted goal at 21:17 off of a penalty kick. It was the second penalty kick that the native of Iceland has converted this season.
The Spartans spread the margin to 3-0 with a shade under 10 minutes left before intermission. Strine fed Thomas Campbell the ball in the box and the junior from Middletown, NJ tucked it into the net from the left side of the box for his second goal of the season.
Elisabetarson closed out the scoring 10:33 into the second half. His penalty kick was saved by High Point keeper Corey Whisenhunt the only save by a Panther keeper all night. But Elisabetarson got the rebound and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give UNCG a 4-0 advantage. All four of his goals have come out of penalty kick situations this season, with Saturday's miss being the first he hasn't converted this year.
UNCG beat High Point for the sixth consecutive season and is now 17-4-2 all-time against the Panthers. Overall, UNCG is unbeaten in the last 13 matches against High Point (12-0-1), with the Panthers last winning back on September 13, 1977.
The Spartans continue their four-game road trip next Wednesday night when they visit Charlotte for a 7 pm non-conference clash.
