BOONE, NC – Juan Obregon scored twice in the first 6:36 of the match as Appalachian State snapped UNCG's five-match unbeaten streak and extend its own unbeaten streak to seven straight with a 4-0 win over the Spartans on Wednesday in the Southern Conference men's soccer opener for both squads.
Obregon opened the scoring at 3:12 when Sean Sassano played a cross to the center of the box and Obregon knocked it home for the early lead. His second tally came just 3:24 later when Corey Lugger came up with a steal and dumped it into Obregon in the box. Obregon was left one-on-one with the keeper and poked it home for his third goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
The Mountaineers (5-1-2, 1-0-0) made it 3-0 at 39:18 when McCoy Livingston scored from six yards out after a corner kick by Michael Walters.
Walters and Sassano hooked up for the last goal 3:40 after the intermission. Sassano fed Walters for his first goal of the season to close out the scoring.
UNCG (4-2-2, 0-1-0) had a 12-11 advantage in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks. However, Appalachian State keeper Greg Walters recorded his third straight shutout with eight saves for the Mountaineers. Nate Berry had four saves for the Spartans.
It was the third time in the last four years that Appalachian State has beaten UNCG during the regular season, although the Spartans knocked the Mountaineers out of the SoCon Tourrney last November. The Spartans are now 6-4-1 in SoCon openers since joining the league.
Looking to get back in the win column, UNCG will return to action Saturday night when it hosts Akron for Homecoming. The match gets underway at 7 pm.
