SPARTANBURG , SC Sophomore forward Kelly Attayek scored twice to give the UNC Greensboro women's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Wofford in their Southern Conference opener Thursday night in Spartanburg, SC. With the win the Spartans (4-3-1, 1-0-0) increase their series record with Wofford (4-4-1, 0-1-0) to 14-0 and mark the 10th consecutive time they have shutout the Terriers.
Attayek and freshman forward/midfielder Kristin Player connected for both UNCG goals.
Just under the 51-minute mark, Player crossed the ball from the right side to the top of the box for Attayek. Attayek touched the ball past Wofford goalkeeper Katie McChesney and into the left corner for her fourth goal of the season.
The Player/Attayek connection struck again at the 84:53 mark to put the Spartans up 2-0. Player drove the ball down the right sideline and then centered it in front of the Wofford goal. From 10 yards out, Attayek fired in her second goal of the night and fifth of the season.
“It's always good to get a conference win on the road,” head coach Eddie Radwanski commented after the game. “There are no easy games in the conference and getting that first win was a good feeling.”
“In the first half we started out a little like our legs were still on the bus, but after a few adjustments at halftime we came out and really brought up our game.”
“We defended well, we took some shots, and we got the job done.
The Spartans tallied 14 shots and senior goalkeeper Katherine Ryan made seven saves. The Terriers also recorded seven saves; McChesney is credited with six and the team one.
This is Ryan's fourth shutout of the season, and the ninth of her career.
On Saturday, the Spartans continue their conference road swing as they travel to Cullowhee, NC to take on the Western Carolina women's Catamount soccer team.
