BOCA RATON, FL The UNC Greensboro women's soccer team rebounded after a 3-2 loss on Friday night with a 1-0 win over Ball State in their final game of the Florida Atlantic Classic on Sunday afternoon.
UNCG (3-1) was led by freshman Kristin Player who tallied the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of the game. The Placentia, CA native has tallied three goals in the Spartans last four games. UNCG goalkeeper Katherine Ryan tallied four saves in 90 minutes of action.
Ball State (2-2) was led by Emily Rein who tallied two shots, including on shot on goal, in the loss. Katelyn Alexander, Sarah Schumaker and Jacki Eft also recorded shots on goal for the Cardinals.
The Spartans got things rolling early in the game when Player took the ball from the middle of the field and tucked it just past Ball State goalkeeper, Amy Cleeter to give UNCG the early 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals were able to get several shots off but couldn't pick up the equalizer as the Spartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half UNCG recorded four shots on goal and Ball State was able to get off three shots including two shots on goal but tight defense by UNCG's core of Lauren Lopez, Jamie Corti and Katherine Ryan kept the Cardinals out of reach and gave the Spartans their third shutout of the season.
The Spartans return to UNCG Soccer Stadium Wednesday when they take on the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, marking the first time since 1989 the Tar Heels have traveled to Greensboro to take on the Spartans. Game time is set for 7 pm.
