GREENSBORO, NC Nirav Kadam and Tim Masters scored goals early in the second half as UNC Greensboro topped High Point, 2-0, in men's soccer action Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans won consecutive matches for the second time this season and raised their record to 5-7-1 on the year with the win. High Point, which has non-conference wins over SoCon members Elon, Davidson and Appalachian State this season, dropped to 5-5-1.
After a scoreless first half, Kadam broke the tie at 57:10. A header attempt by a Panther defender went astray and Kadam collected it inside the box. The sophomore from Germantown, MD, poked the ball into the goal from 10 yards out just inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
Just 3:15 later, the Spartans got an insurance tally from Masters. Matt Foxx took a shot that deflected off goalkeeper Michael Chesler out away from the goal. Masters, who has missed the last four matches due to injury, gathered the rebound and only had to blast it past a defender near the goal line for his third goal of the season.
Nate Berry recorded six saves for the win, four of those in the second half. UNCG was outshot 15-11 by High Point and the Panthers recorded nine consecutive shots at one point after the Spartans got their two-goal lead. But Berry held them off for his second consecutive shutout.
UNCG's win was the seventh straight over High Point since the series resumed in 2002. UNCG is 18-4-2 all-time against the Panthers.
The Spartans will visit top-ranked and defending national champion Wake Forest on Tuesday at 7 pm.
