CHARLESTON, SC – The UNC Greensboro softball team split a doubleheader with the College of Charleston Cougars in Southern Conference action on Saturday. UNCG took the first game, 4-1 in extra innings while the Cougars rallied for a 4-0 win in the late game.
UNCG (15-28, 2-9 SoCon) was led by the junior second baseman Lyndsay Mouse. She was 3-of-7 from the plate on the afternoon with a home run, three RBI and one run scored. She also had one stolen base on the afternoon.
Hannah Angel picked up her seventh win of the season in the first game. In 9.0 innings of work the Eastbend, NC, native allowed one run on four hits and had a career-high 11 strikeouts in the win. Amber Harrell fell to 8-15 on the season after allowing four runs on seven hits in the late game.
Game one featured a pitchers duel between Angel and Charleston's Terri Mesko. Both teams were held scoreless through eight innings before the Spartans got things going in the top of the ninth.
Kristen Gabel and Mary Greenway reached on back-to-back walks from Mesko and both advanced a base on a wild pitch before Lyndsay Mouse hit a three-run home run that put the Spartans ahead, 3-0. Brittany Ausley kept things going with a single up the middle and moved to second with an error from the College of Charleston's center fielder.
Mary Catherine Vercoe tallied UNCG's third consecutive hit with a single through the left side which brought Ausley around the bases for UNCG's final score of the inning.
College of Charleston was able to push one run across in the home portion of the inning but that was all it would get as the Spartans picked up their second SoCon win of the season.
The Cougars were able to rally to take the late game, 4-0, as UNCG was able to keep its bats going. The Spartans recorded six hits in the contest.
The Spartans threatened to put a run across in the first inning. Mary Greenway reached on an error from Charleston's shortstop and moved to second with her 37th stolen base of the season. The Roanoke, VA, native moved to third on a single from Mouse but a pop out and ground out ended the threat.
UNCG also had a chance in the second inning when they loaded the bases but with two outs Greenway lined out to shortstop to keep the Spartans off the board.
The teams were scoreless until the fourth inning when the Cougars were able to take a 3-0 lead. Tiffany Harmon led off the fourth with a single up the middle and the stole second with Kristi Woodall at the plate. Woodall then hit a single back to the pitcher to score Harmon.
Woodall was then plated on an RBI double from Kristie Shifflett and Shannon Howard recorded the third run on a sacrifice fly by Mesko. Samantha Kubinski scored the final run of the game in the fifth inning on a Woodall single up the middle.
The Spartans and Cougars will battle for the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm at Patriots Point Softball Field.
