After giving up an early goal on a misplay from the back line, UNCG rebounded to net the equalizer in the 14th minute of the game. Jamie Corti (Apex, NC) rose above the mass in the box to get her head on a Kristin Player (Placentia, CA) corner kick to give the Spartans their first goal of the season. For Corti, it was just the second goal of her career. Player added her seventh career assist to help pull UNCG even.
The Spartans nearly pulled ahead in the 24th minute when a scramble in front of the net off a free kick led to a header by Lauren Lopez (Concord, NC) that was saved on the line by a Coastal Carolina defender. Jenn Partenheimer (Apex, NC) struck the rebound but sent her fourth shot of the half high and wide.
Mary Kate Towne (Royal Palm Beach, FL) helped give the Spartans a brief lead in the second half, sending a cross into the box that found it's way into the net on an attempted clear by Coastal's Colleen Schohl. The Spartans had two quick opportunities in the box as Kim Murphy (Wake Forest, NC) attempted her first shot as a Spartan with a header that was deflected by Coastal goalkeeper Amy Haggard. Player then ripped a shot that seemed as if it had eyes for the net but it was deflected away by a Coastal defender inside the box.
Heather Haupt pulled the Chanticleers even in the 67th minute, sending a shot from the opposite side of the field into the lower left corner for her first goal of the season to ultimately send the game into overtime.
After battling through the first overtime without a goal, the Spartans wasted little time in netting the game-winner. Katie Evans (Raleigh, NC) turned with a pass to Towne who then turned at the top of the box and nudged a through ball between several Coastal defenders to the feet of Attayek who then slotted the ball into the lower left corner to end the game and send the Spartans to their first victory of the season.
UNCG took 18 shots to Coastal Carolina's eight putting 11 of them on net, forcing Haggard to make six saves. Vogel led the Spartans in goal, recording four saves in just the fifth start of the career. The Spartans also bested the Chanticleers on the corner kicks, sending nine kicks into the box, including one that would eventually lead to their first goal of the game.
The Spartans will finish out their season-opening home-stand when they welcome Utah to the UNCG Soccer Stadium on Sunday. Kick off is set for 1:00 p.m.
