GREENSBORO, N.C. – Caley Redden had a match-high 10 kills and the Spartans extended their winning streak to six matches as UNC Greensboro swept Davidson, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Fleming Gymnasium. The match was the Spartans' annual Dig Pink match, which raises awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer. $486 was raised for the Side-Out Foundation on the afternoon through t-shirt sales and donations.
The Spartans improved to 12-9 overall this year and 5-2 in the Southern Conference to remain in second-place in the North Division. The Wildcats fell to 4-19 this season and 1-6 in league play.
In addition to Redden's ten kills, Luciana Shafer added nine kills and Alissa Beaudway chipped in eight. Ari Lysacek had a match-high 27 assists and Catherine Hanners also had a match-high with 20 digs.
The Spartans opened the match with a kill by Redden before back-to-back aces from Kayleigh Knerr to give UNCG an early 3-0 lead. The Spartans extended their lead to 8-3 and led 14-8 midway through the set. The Wildcats rallied to bring it within 21-18, but it wasn't enough as UNCG took the first set, 25-20.
The second set was a battle of runs for each team as UNCG jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in the set. Davidson responded by going on a 15-2 run to take a 16-10 lead. The Spartans clawed back to knot the set at 20 before winning five of the final seven points to win the set, 25-22, and go up 2-0 heading into the break.
The Spartans came out of halftime on fire as Lysacek delivered back-to-back aces as they grabbed an early 5-0 lead. The Wildcats fought back to within 7-6, but the Spartans went on a 9-0 run to blow the set open and take a 16-7 lead. The Spartans went on to win seven of the final nine point to win the set, 25-14, and clinch the sweep.
The Spartans will look to make it seven wins in a row on Sunday as they take on Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
