DAVIDSON, N.C. - UNC Greensboro's women's soccer team saw its 33-match Southern Conference regular-season unbeaten streak come to an end Friday night with a 2-1 loss at Davidson. The loss was the first one for the Spartans in regular-season league play in nearly four years.
The Spartans (6-5, 2-1 SoCon) had been 31-0-2 since dropping their regular-season finale at Furman on Oct. 30, 2005, winning three straight regular-season conference crowns since then. UNCG went 9-0-1 in 2006, 10-0-0 in 2007 and 10-0-1 in 2008.
Davidson (4-8, 1-2 SoCon) got a Lauren Conner goal in the 80th minute to break a 1-all tie. Kyri Bye-Nagel picked up an assist on the play, as Conner scored off her rebounded shot off a corner kick.
Jenn Partenheimer scored UNCG's lone goal, knotting the score at 1 in the 58th minute. Partenheimer scored from 30 yards out, blasting a shot into the upper right corner of the net. Jaimey Etten and Nicole Danford picked up assists on the play.
The Wildcats had gotten on the board just 10 minutes earlier, scoring quickly after halftime for the game's first goal. Courtney Hart took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Spartans and scored near post for her first goal of the season.
After Conner put Davidson ahead in the final 10 minutes, the Spartans had one final shot at tying it. Freshman Tabitha Padgett put a shot on frame in the 82nd minute, but Wildcat keeper Jessie Baxa came up with perhaps the most important of her five saves on the evening.
Davidson outshot UNCG in the contest, 14-12, and had four corner kicks to the Spartans' two. The Wildcats held an 8-7 shot advantage at the break.
Padgett had five of UNCG's 12 shots on the evening, but saw her streak of three straight games with a goal come to an end.
UNCG keeper Kelsey Kearney made six saves in the losing effort.
Davidson's win was its first over UNCG since 2004 and just its fourth ever in the series. The Spartans fall to 19-4-2 against the Wildcats all-time.
UNCG returns to action on Sunday at winless Georgia Southern. The Eagles come into the contest 0-10 overall and 0-3 in the SoCon. Opening kick is set for 2 p.m.
