SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wofford's Wilson Hood struck for two goals less than three minutes apart early in the first half and No. 4 seed UNC Greensboro could only cut the lead to one before falling to the top-seeded Terriers, 3-1 in the semifinals of the Southern Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Friday.
Redshirt junior Matt Strine scored for UNCG (6-10-3) in the 51st minute, putting a shot into the left corner from 10 yards out to make it a 2-1 contest. Cruz Oronos assisted on the play.
Hood scored his fifth goal of the season from 10 yards out at the 9:41 mark of the game, converting a Kentrel Owens pass to put the home squad on top early.
Just 2:45 later, Hood struck again, nodding in a Branson Hyatt cross at the 12:26 mark to give Wofford (11-2-3) a commanding 2-0 lead less than 13 minutes into the game.
The Spartans did not get off a shot until the 44th minute of action, but regrouped quickly after halftime with Strine's goal. Senior Thomas Campbell put a shot on frame just minutes later, but Wofford keeper Thomas Hunter was there to make the save, one of his two on the night.
UNCG keeper Peyton Ford made saves on attempts by Hood and Owens to keep the Spartans within one, and UNCG's Denny Mask put another shot on net that Hunter stopped in the 71st minute.
Wofford's Yakov Rubinchik finally got another shot to go, adding an insurance goal in the 84th minute to put the game out of reach. Hood picked up the assist to cap a five-point outing.
Now trailing by two, the Spartans played the final 5:49 of the contest a man down after a red card was issued to freshman A.J. Nelson.
Ford finished with three saves on the evening.
Wofford outshot the Spartans 12-5, while corner kicks were even at four apiece.
The loss was the first in program history to the Terriers, as UNCG falls to 15-1-1 against Wofford all-time. The lone draw came earlier this season, when the squads played to a 2-2 stalemate, also in Spartanburg.
