CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNC Greensboro hit just .071 for the match as the Spartans fell to Chattanooga, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Maclellen Gym.
The Spartans fell to 6-9 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon play. The Mocs improved to 9-5 this year and 1-1 in league play with the win.
"We had just a few individuals play hard," said head coach Patrick Nicholas. "That was embarrassing for our program, for UNCG athletics and for the university as a whole. However, we are going to get in the gym and we are going to turn it up and find out who wants to play, to really compete hard."
Billi Baker led the Spartans with eight kills, while Luciana Shafer and Emily Lindborg had seven and six kills, respectively. Catherine Hanners had a match-high 20 digs and Ari Lysacek added 20 assists.
Courtney Barnes had eight kills for the Mocs and Ellie Kuhn had a match-high seven blocks.
The Spartans kept it close early in the first set as they trailed just 7-6, but the Mocs went on a 16-5 to jump out to a 23-11 lead. Chattanooga went on to win the set, 25-13, on a service ace by Paula Passmore.
UNCG came back to battle with the Mocs in the second set as the two teams found themselves tied 15 times in the set with seven lead changes. Facing set point, a kill by Caley Redden tied the set at 24 before Chattanooga rattled off back-to-back points to win the set, 26-24.
The Mocs led the entire third set and hopped out to an 18-10 lead on a kill by Laura Brock. Chattanooga went on to seal the victory on an attack error by the Spartans to win the final set, 25-18.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday as they face cross-town rival North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. in the Corbett Sports Center.
