Florida State spoils UNCG's home opener, Spartans fall 97-73

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chris Singleton had a triple-double and Michael Snaer and Okaro White each added 16 points as Florida State defeated UNCG, 97-73, in the home-opener for the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at the Greensboro Coliseum.

The Spartans (0-2) were led by a trio of freshman in double figures in their Greensboro Coliseum debuts. David Williams led UNCG with 16 points and Aloysius Henry added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Cody Henegar also had 12 points and nearly had a double-double as he recorded nine rebounds.

In addition to his 22 points, Singleton also had a game-high 11 rebounds and 10 steals for the Seminoles (2-0) to record the first triple-double of his career. Singleton added six assists and four blocks, as well, in the winning effort. Derwin Kitchen was also in double figures for Florida State as he had 11 points on 4-5 shooting.

The Spartans got off to a rough start as they turned the ball over five times in the first 2:26. The Seminoles jumped out to an early 12-4 lead as Singleton had 10 of the 12 points in the opening 4:14. Florida State continued to take advantage of UNCG turnovers as it turned 26 Spartan misues into 32 points for the game.

The Seminoles continued to build upon their lead in the opening stanza as they went up by 14 at 26-12 on a 3-pointer by Luke Loucks. The Spartans came back with a trey by Brandon Evans and a jumper by Williams to pull within single digits, 28-19.

But that was as close as UNCG would get the rest of the afternoon as Florida State extended its lead to as many as 19 in the first half before taking a 46-29 lead into halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half up with a layup by Williams, but the Seminoles immediately responded with a 15-2 run over the next two minutes to take a commanding 61-32 lead.

Despite its height disadvantage, UNCG only trailed 42-39 on the boards and actually held a 20-17 lead on the offensive glass.

After cold shooting of just 30.3% (10-for-33) in the first half, UNCG settled down and shot 45.9% (17-for-37) in the second half. For the game, the Seminoles shot 51.5% on 35-of-68 shooting.

The Spartans return to the floor next weekend as they host Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum.

FREE THROWS: The Spartans used 16 players in the game, clearing the bench in the final minute… freshman Trevis Simpson did not play for the second straight game as he recovers from a shoulder injury. He is listed as day-to-day… the Spartans escaped allowing 100 points in consecutive games – something they haven't done since the 1974-75 season.
