UNCG drops SoCon-opener on the road to Wofford, 92-70

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a night when Wofford unveiled its 2009-10 Southern Conference Championship banner, the Terriers proved once again they will be a force in the SoCon this year as UNCG fell to the Terriers, 92-70, in Benjamin Johnson Arena on Thursday night.

The story of the game was the outside shooting by Wofford (3-5) as the Terriers drained 13 of their 22 attempts from behind the arc. Cameron Rundles led the Terriers all night as he posted a game-high 24 points, including 18 in the first half. Kevin Giltner was great from 3-point range as he went 6-8 from downtown for 18 points, while reigning SoCon Player of the Year Noah Dahlman added 16 points.

The Spartans (0-6) were led by Aloysius Henry as he scored a team-high 18 points, while Brandon Evans chipped in 12 points off of the bench. David Williams was also in double figures for UNCG as he recorded 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds and five steals.

UNCG trailed by 12 at the half at 46-34, but the Terriers came out of the locker room and went on an 11-4 run to open the half to stretch its lead to 57-38. The Spartans countered with six-straight points to cut the lead back down to 13 at 57-44.

Wofford would make another run to break the game open as the Terriers scored 10 unanswered points to take a 72-48 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.

The Terriers would go on to lead by as many at 29 points in the second half after a pair of free throws by Brad Loesing. A Brian Cole jumper from the free throw line would make the final score, 92-70.

In the first half, the Spartans got on the board with an alley-oop by Henry from Korey Van Dussen and then minutes later used a 7-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Van Dussen, to tie the game at 10.

A little over four minutes later UNCG got a 3 from Kyle Randall from the left wing that pull the Spartans within three at 22-19. The Terriers took their first double-digit lead with 1:46 remaining in the half on a 3 by Giltner to make it 40-28.

UNCG shot 54.2 percent in the first half on 13-24 shooting, but shot just 38.7 percent after halftime as the Terriers pulled away.

The Spartans were outrebounded in the contest 38-27, but did bring down 12 offensive boards and converted those into 13 second-chance points.

After averaging over 20 turnovers in its first five games, UNCG committed just 13 turnovers in the game. UNCG forced 14 turnovers, though, and scored 14 points off of them.

The Spartans will return home on Monday as they host Furman for their SoCon home opener at 7 p.m. in the Greensboro Coliseum.
