GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro scored 13 unanswered runs as the Spartans completed its second-straight weekend sweep by defeating Albany, 13-1, on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
The Spartans (6-1) are now off to their best start since UNCG began the 2004 season with a 9-1 record.
Warren Slack (1-1) pitched five innings and allowed just one run on five hits and struck out four to pick up his first win this season. Colby Hyatt slammed the door on the Great Danes by giving up just two hits over the final four innings to pick up his first career save.
Albany starter Greg Lutton picked up the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.
The Spartans were led at the plate by Corey Overholtzer who went 3-4 with three runs scored and Zach Leach who had three RBI and two runs scored on a 2-4 day. Lloyd Enzor, Ray Quinones and Kris Richards all added two RBI each for UNCG.
Gaige Nolan went 1-3 with an RBI and Jeff Welsh had a 2-3 day for the Great Danes.
Albany struck first in the top of the second inning as Jamie Liebowitz hit a two-out single to right field. Welsh followed with a single to center field before Gaige scored Liebowitz from second on a single to left field to put the Great Danes ahead, 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, Overholtzer delivered the first Spartan hit of the day, a single to center field. Lloyd Enzor followed with by taking an 0-2 pitch over the wall in right field to give UNCG a 2-1 lead they would never relinquish.
UNCG tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning as Overholtzer started the action with another one-out single to center field. Ed Jayjack then walked and Quinones followed by delivering a single to left center to score Overholtzer from second. Jayjack scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give UNCG a 4-1 lead.
The score stayed that way until the seventh inning when the Spartans exploded for eight runs. Overholtzer led off the inning with a double down the right field line and Enzor followed by reaching on a throwing error by the shortstop. Jayjack walked to load the bases and then Quinones reached on another error to score Overholtzer. Leach came up and cleared the bases with a double off the wall in center field to give UNCG an 8-1 lead. Chris Barker and Joey Frabasile each had RBI later in the inning before Richards capped off the scoring with a two-RBI single to put UNCG ahead, 12-1.
Leach hit another double in the eighth inning before scoring later on a wild pitch to make the final score, 13-1.
The Spartans return to play on Wednesday as they travel to play NC State at 3 p.m. at Doak Field.
