GREENSBORO, N.C. – Davidson shot nearly 60 percent from the floor and got a career-high 25 points from Ashley Lax as the Wildcats topped UNC Greensboro on Saturday, 83-53, in the Spartans' annual Pink Zone game.
Davidson (12-10, 10-4 Southern Conference) made 32 of its 55 shots, good for a 58.2 shooting percentage for the game. Julia Paquette (13), Alex Thompson (11) and Sophia Aleksandravicius (10) joined Lax in double figures, while Aleksandravicius had a game-high 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.
Amanda Leigh paced UNCG (7-16, 4-11 SoCon) with 16 points, while Kendra Smith had 11. Monique Floyd added eight points and eight rebounds for the Spartans, who lost their seventh straight.
UNCG kept it close early, but suffered through a field goal drought of 8 minutes, 32 seconds midway through the first half as Davidson pulled away. After a Leigh 3-pointer made it 14-10 with 12:53 to play in the first, the Spartans could only manage a Leigh free throw until Floyd's layup with 4:21 to go. The Wildcats turned in a 13-1 run over the drought, and led 27-13 after Floyd's bucket.
A Lax 3 put Davidson up 30-13 with 2:51 before the break, but UNCG finally got its offense in gear, with a spark from TaShama Banner off the bench.
After a Smith jumper got the run going, Banner hit a pair of free throws and followed a Lakiah Hyson free throw with a steal and a fastbreak layup.
Lax added another of her five 3s on the afternoon, but an Agne Girstautaite layup and another steal and layup from Banner got the Spartans' deficit back in single digits at 33-24. Hyson added another free throw just before the half as UNCG cut Davidson's lead to eight points.
All told, Banner had all six of her points in the game in a span of just 1:37.
A Leigh 3 to start the second-half scoring drew the Spartans even closer at 33-28, but Davidson was about to blow it open. A Paquette layup and a 3 from Thompson pumped the Wildcats' lead back up to double digits before Smith's jumper made it 38-30. Paquette answered with a fastbreak layup, however, putting Davidson back up by double digits to stay.
The Wildcats stretched their lead back to 18 at 51-33, but a 7-0 Spartans run got UNCG back within 11. Davidson then rattled off a 14-0 run in less than three minutes to put the game out of reach.
UNCG shot just 28.8 percent (17-for-59) for the contest, including starting the game 2-for-18 from the floor.
Davidson easily won the rebounding battle, 40-28, and dominated in the paint, scoring 36 points there to just 12 for UNCG.
The Spartans forced 21 turnovers but failed to take advantage of them, as Davidson held a 25-13 advantage in points off turnovers. UNCG committed 19 of its own.
A season-high crowd of 462 turned out for UNCG's Pink Zone game, which benefits the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and UNCG's Relay for Life.
The game was also the 900th of coach Lynne Agee's career. Agee now sports an overall record of 586-314 in 32 seasons as a head coach.
UNCG returns to action on Friday, Feb. 12, when it hosts Wofford at 7 p.m.
