GREENSBORO, N.C. – Davidson's Kristen Johnsen hit the front end of a two-shot foul with 44 seconds left to put the Wildcats on top and UNCG had four chances for the go-ahead bucket on the other end but could not convert as the Spartans dropped a 53-52 Southern Conference contest Tuesday.
With the teams tied at 52 in the last minute of play, Johnsen was fouled going up for a layup with 44.2 seconds left. The junior hit the first shot but missed the second, with Monique Floyd coming away with the rebound for UNCG (9-10, 6-5 SoCon).
After a UNCG timeout, the Spartans' Dayshaun Richbow got a look from just inside the 3-point line at the top of the key, but the shot was off the mark. The Wildcats (8-10, 4-6 SoCon) got the rebound, but Richbow stole the ball away, giving UNCG new life with precious seconds ticking away.
Floyd's midrange jumper with 8 seconds left wouldn't fall, but Janae' Stevenson grabbed the offensive rebound and UNCG called another timeout.
Richbow had another chance with just 2 ticks left on the clock, but that shot came up empty, as well. Stevenson again got the offensive board, but her stickback attempt was blocked by Davidson's Sophia Aleksandravicius at the buzzer to send the Spartans to their third straight home loss.
Stevenson finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds for her second career double-double. Floyd finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Aleksandravicius had a game-high 20 points to go with a team-best seven boards for Davidson. She was the only Wildcat in double figures.
"I'm very disappointed," UNCG coach Lynne Agee said. "We didn't come to play tonight. We looked very sluggish from the beginning, both mentally and physically. I just didn't think we were here. We had a hard time getting anything done. I didn't feel we brought the energy we needed and we really weren't moving well. I'm very disappointed in that."
UNCG won the rebounding battle for just the fourth time this season, pulling down 39 to Davidson's 33. A staggering 23 of the Spartans' rebounds were on the offensive end of the floor.
The game was every bit as tight as the final score indicated, as there were 12 ties and the lead changed hands 13 times.
The Wildcats used an 18-4 run over a 6-minute, 30-second stretch in the first half to turn a 10-6 UNCG lead into a 24-14 Davidson advantage, with six different players scored in the Wildcats' spurt. The Spartans, however, closed the frame on an 8-2 run to get back in it, making it a 26-22 game at the break.
An Amanda Leigh 3-pointer put UNCG back on top at 35-34 with 15:41 left, but the lead would change hands several times after that.
After a pair of Laura Murray free throws put the Wildcats ahead 40-37, UNCG freshman Breonna Patterson converted a three-point play to tie the game with 12:46 left. Neither side would lead by more than two the rest of the way.
An Agneta Morkunaite jumper high off the glass gave the Spartans their biggest second-half lead at 42-40, but Aleksandravicius countered with a layup on the other end to tie it again. After the teams traded the lead for the next 5-plus minutes, Stevenson put UNCG back up by two at 52-50 with 2:32 remaining.
Lax hit both ends of a one-and-one to tie it at 52 with 1:31 left, setting the stage for the frantic finish.
In a game in which every point mattered, UNCG went just 14-for-22 from the free throw line and shot 30.5 percent (18-for-59) from the floor just one game after shooting a season-high 50 percent against Appalachian State on Saturday.
Both sides have now won by one point on the other's home floor this season, as Davidson's win avenges UNCG's 59-58 victory in Davidson, N.C., on Dec. 31.
UNCG returns to action Saturday at Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. Opening tip is set at 3 p.m.
