SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Ariel Newman had a match-high 18 kills and UNCG rallied to win the final three sets as the Spartans defeated Wofford, 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17), on Saturday evening in Southern Conference action.
The Spartans (13-13, 5-5 SoCon) were led by Newman who had a .341 hitting percentage on her 18 kills. Karrian Chambers and Morgan Freeman also had double-digit kills as they recorded 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Ari Lysacek had a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs and Kellie Orewiler posted a match-high 22 digs.
Amanda Liguori had a team-high 16 kills for the Terriers (13-13, 2-8 SoCon), while Taylor Baird added 11 kills and a .714 hitting percentage.
Wofford came out and took an 11-6 lead in the first set, but UNCG was able to trim the Terrier lead down to 18-15 on a kill by Newman. The Terriers then went on a 5-1 run en route to winning the opening set, 25-21.
In the second set, Wofford led 17-14 before the Spartans went on a 6-1 run, capped off by a Newman service ace, to take a 20-18 lead. The teams were later tied at 23, but UNCG got back-to-back kills from Chambers and Newman to win the set, 25-23, and tie the set at 1-all going into intermission.
After the break, UNCG opened up the third set and took a 7-1 lead before a kill by Wendy Burnett made the Spartan lead just 20-17 late in the set. The Spartans wrapped up the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-18.
In the fourth and final set, UNCG narrowly led late in the set 19-17. The Spartans ended things in style as they went on a 6-0 run to win the set, 25-17, and the match 3-1.
The Spartans will continue their four-match road swing on Friday as they travel to Appalachian State for a 7 p.m. contest.
