GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG rallied late to win the first set 26-24 before taking the final two sets in easier fashion as the Spartans defeated Chattanooga, 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-13), on Friday evening in Fleming Gymnasium.
Ariel Newman led the Spartans (15-14, 7-6 Southern Conference) with 11 kills and no errors to post a .478 hitting percentage. Karrian Chambers nearly had a double-double as she recorded 12 kills and nine digs, while Kellie Orewiler had a match-high 23 digs.
The Mocs (5-23, 3-10 SoCon) were paced by Jennifer Kuroski and Heather Parman who each had 11 kills. Melissa Green added a team-high 17 digs.
Chattanooga took control early in the first set as it used a 6-0 run to go ahead 13-7. The Spartans continued to chip away at the Mocs lead, but still trailed 23-21 late in the set.
UNCG would take the next three points to have set point at 24-23 after a kill by Chambers, but Chattanooga called a timeout and won the ensuing point to tie the set at 24. After another Chambers kill gave the Spartans their second set point, Morgan Freeman and Ariel Newman came up with a big block to win the set, 26-24.
The Spartans trailed 3-1 to begin the second set before taking the lead for good by going on a 9-3 run to open up at 10-6 advantage. UNCG would lead by as many as eight in the set at 20-12 en route to winning the set, 25-20, to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
UNCG was able to carry that momentum into the final set as they led the entire way. The Spartans took a commanding 17-5 lead after a kill by Chambers before cruising to win the set, 25-13.
The Spartans will face off against North Division leader Samford on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
