GREENSBORO, N.C. – Memphis stormed out and took the first set, 25-10, and UNCG was never able to gain any traction as the Spartans fell to the Tigers, 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-11), on Friday evening in the first match of the Spartan Spiketacular for both squads.
The Spartans fell to 4-8 with the loss, while Memphis improved to 9-2 this season.
Ariel Newman and Karrian Chambers each had six kills for UNCG to lead the offense. Ari Lysacek had a team-high 11 assists and Kellie Orewiler added nine digs.
Altrese Hawkins led the Tigers with 11 kills and three others had at least eight kills. Hajnalka Molnar added match-high 36 assists for Memphis who hit an incredible .474 for the match.
In the first set, the Tigers used an early 8-0 run to jump out to a 9-1 lead on a Spartan attack error. Memphis would stretch its lead to 17-5 later in the set before winning the set, 25-10.
Memphis once again took the early lead in the second set as it went up 6-2 to force a UNCG timeout. After trailing by as many as seven, the Spartans tried to mount a late rally and cut their deficit down to 19-15 on a Tiger error. It wasn't enough, however, as the Tigers would take a 2-0 lead into intermission by winning the set, 25-18.
The third set was more of the same as the Tigers ran out to an early 11-4 lead. Memphis would sideout at 90% in the final set as they took the set, 25-11, and the match, 3-0.
The Spartans will return to action on Saturday as they face Howard at 1 p.m. before facing Radford later in the day at 7 p.m.
