Second-half surge lifts Wofford past UNCG, 68-56

GREENSBORO, N.C. –Wofford shot 61 percent in the second half and limited UNCG to 39 percent shooting for the game as the Terriers handed the Spartans a 68-56 setback in Southern Conference play, Tuesday at Greensboro Coliseum.

Playing for the second time in three games without injured guard and Southern Conference leading scorer Trevis Simpson, the Spartans (12-17 overall, 10-7 SoCon) came up short in their second opportunity to clinch the north division.

Wofford led 30-28 at halftime and slowly built their lead in the opening minutes of the second half. The Terriers (18-12, 11-6) made four of the first five shots in the half and took a 38-34 lead on a jumper by Lee Skinner with 16:08 left.

Wofford stretched its lead to 47-38 with 10:42 left but didn't pull away until late. Despite several opportunities to take control of the game, the Spartans couldn't convert.

After getting to with 47-40 on a pair of Kyle Randall free throws with 10:19 to play, UNCG forced Wofford into nine straight empty possessions over the next 4:32. But UNCG got just a Derrell Armstrong layup during the same span, missing several short layups and open jumpers along the way.

Wofford regained control with back-to-back jumpers by Drew Crowell for a 51-42 lead with 4:57 to go. UNCG never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Armstrong led the Spartans with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting, but the junior guard was just 1-of-6 from 3-point range. Korey Van Dussen scored 11 points and was the only other Spartan to score in double figures.

Wofford placed four players in double figures, led by Loesing's 19 points.

The Spartans shot 39 percent for the game, including 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. UNCG hit on 90 percent of its free throws, but was just 9-of-10 from the stripe.

The Terriers shot 51 percent for the game, and 18-of-21 from the free throw line. Wofford also out-rebounded the Spartans, 31-24.

UNCG closes out the regular season when they visit Elon, 7 p.m., Saturday in a game which could determine the North Division champion.
