Short Trip To SoCon Rival Elon On Tap For Women's Basketball

Game Notes (PDF)

ELON, N.C. - The UNCG women's basketball team looks to snap a five-game losing streak Monday night as the Spartans travel to Elon for the first of two meetings with the Phoenix this season. Tipoff at Alumni Gym is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Spartans are coming off a 67-48 loss to Furman in which UNCG never enjoyed a lead. Junior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) recorded her second double-double of the season and seventh of her career with 15 points and 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. She also racked up three blocks to push her career total to 93. Freshman guard Ebona Goins (Greensboro, N.C./Dudley) set a new personal high on the glass, pulling down six rebounds.

UNCG took 74 shots in the game, thanks in part to 25 offensive rebounds, but could only hit 22 for 30 percent. Furman knocked down 28 of its 60 attempts to finish at 47 percent. The teams combined to turn the ball over 38 times and each squad netted 18 points of those miscues. Thanks to its work on the offensive glass, the Spartans ended up with a 46-43 advantage in rebounding.

• Monday's contest marks the 41st between UNCG and Elon with the Spartans holding a 23-17 advantage in the series. The Phoenix won both meetings last season while the teams split during the 2010-11 season with each squad winning on the others' home floor.

• In the last encounter between the programs, the Spartans shot just 23.9 percent from the floor. Elon's Ali Ford scored a game-high 19 points on the evening, while Kelsey Evans had 11 to go with nine rebounds. Greensboro native Sam Coffer also flirted with a double-double with eight points and nine boards. Natalie Headley scored 14 points to lead UNCG with Janae' Stevenson adding eight points and seven rebounds. UNCG forced 23 Elon turnovers, but couldn't hang with the Phoenix in the paint - where Elon had a 34-18 scoring advantage. The Spartans were just 1-for-12 (8.3 percent) from three-point range.

• The Phoenix are 7-7 overall and 4-1 in SoCon action after downing Wofford on the road by a 67-57 score. The Phoenix had four players finish in double figures while the defense forced 21 turnovers. Elon made 22-of-58 from the field to shoot almost 40 percent with 32 points coming in the paint. The Phoenix made a season-high 21 free throws off 24 attempts to finish 87 percent from the charity stripe. Kelsey Evans led the scoring effort for the maroon and gold with 12 points, while Sam Coffer posted a season-high 11 points. Ali Ford and Kelsey Harris contributed 10 points each. Elon won the rebounding battle, 39-37, with the help of seven rebounds from both Evans and Harris.

• Ford and Evans pack a big scoring punch for the Phoenix as both rank in the top 10 in the league at 15.9 and 14.4 points per game respectively. Evans also averages a team and SoCon third-best 9.9 rebounds per contest.

FROSH LEADING THE WAY...
Freshman Lucy Mason is averaging a team-best 15.3 points per game thus far this season. Not only is she the top freshman scorer in the Southern Conference, but she also ranks first nationally among all rookies as of Jan. 10.

SPEAKING OF FRESHMEN...
UNCG's freshmen have earned valuable playing experience this season and are responsible for over half of the Spartans' offensive output. Of UNCG's 791 points, the rookies have scored 417 (53 percent).

GETTING ON THE GLASS - THE OFFENSIVE GLASS...
The Spartans average 64 attempts from the field per game, thanks in large part to grabbing 227 offensive rebounds. UNCG currently ranks second in the SoCon in offensive rebounding with 16.2 offensive boards per game.

THAT'S REALLY LOW...
UNCG limited North Carolina Central to just 39 points in a victory at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans allowed their fewest amount of points in a single game since holding Fordham to 39 in a 50-39 victory at Fleming Gymnasium Dec. 13, 2008.

THREE ME...
Not only did UNCG tie a single-game program record with 12 three-point field goals against nationally-ranked Florida State, the Spartans fired at 57 percent from beyond the arc - marking their highest percentage since hitting five of seven against Chattanooga last season (Jan. 28, 2012).

LUCKY NUMBER 7(0)...
Over the last four seasons, UNCG is 20-1 when scoring at least 70 points. The Spartans' last loss when scoring 70 was nearly five years ago, Dec. 20, 2007, when UNCG lost at UCF, 76-73. The Blue and Gold reached 70 points just once last year, but it turned out to be in victory as UNCG downed N.C. Central 70-53 on the road.

THREE-POINT STREAK AT 34...
UNCG has nailed at least one three-point field goal in the last 34 games and 189 of the last 190. The Spartans owned a streak of 155-straight contests with a triple until they went 0-6 at Wofford Dec. 17, 2011.

GET THAT STUFF OUTTA HERE...
Junior Janae' Stevenson is rapidly moving her way up the UNCG career blocked shots list. As a freshman, she swatted 36 shots, the fourth-most in a single season in school history. She did two better with 38 blocked shots last season. With 93 to her credit now, she is third in program career history. Stevenson blocked a career-high four shots in UNCG's 55-54 win over Georgia Southern last year. Should she maintain her current pace, Stevenson should easily surpass UNCG's career record of 121 by Rebecca Viverette (1994-98) by the time her career is over.

JUST FINE IN FLEMING...
UNCG has been historically dominant in Fleming Gym, posting a 196-88 (.690) mark at the venue. In 23 years, UNCG has had just four losing seasons in the facility. Last season, the playing surface was christened Lynne Agee Court in honor of the former UNCG coach, who retired in March 2011 after 30 years at the helm. The court was officially dedicated at halftime of UNCG's Dec. 3 contest against Samford.

NEXT UP...
UNCG continues its four-game road swing with a contest at Appalachian State. Tipoff at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C. is scheduled for 2 p.m.
