Women’s Hoops Set To Tangle With Davidson On The Road

Game Notes (PDF)

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team looks to end a seven-game skid Wednesday night, but the Spartans will have to knock off one of the Southern Conference's top teams, Davidson, to do so. The teams will tip off inside Belk Arena at 7 p.m.

The Blue and Gold trailed Appalachian State by a 37-31 score at halftime in Boone Sunday, but the Mountaineers pulled away in the second period and won 81-58.

Junior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) fell just one rebound short of her third-straight double-double, leading the Blue and Gold with 14 points and nine rebounds. She was joined in double figures by freshman guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) who chipped in with 12. Also helping out on the glass was senior forward Sidnei Harmon (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) as she posted eight rebounds.

The Spartans turned the ball over 22 times in the contest and the Mountaineers took advantage by scoring 28 points off those miscues. Appalachian State gave it away 20 times, leading to 16 points for UNCG. Both squads ended up with 65 shots from the field, but the Mountaineers hit 30 of their attempts to finish at 46 percent while the Spartans ended up with a 32-percent performance. ASU also won the overall rebounding battle 46-41, but the Blue and Gold surpassed its season average with 19 offensive boards. UNCG went to the free throw line 24 times thanks to 25 Mountaineer fouls, but could only knock down 13 of the attempts.

• Wednesday's contest marks the 45th between UNCG and Davidson with the Spartans holding a 28-16 advantage in the series. The Wildcats have won five of the last six meetings with the last UNCG victory occurring in Davidson Dec. 31, 2010 by a 59-58 score.

• In the last encounter between the programs, UNCG staged an impressive second-half comeback to whittle a 25-point deficit down to just five but couldn't complete the rally, falling 58-49 Feb. 14, 2012 at Fleming Gymnasium. Breonna Patterson finished with a game-high 16 points and scored 10 of UNCG's first 16 points while Natalie Headley finished with 13 points. Janae' Stevenson doubled her previous career high with four steals, two of which came in the crucial late-game push, and also blocked three shots. Sophia Aleksandravicius, the SoCon's 2011-12 Preseason Player of the Year, had 14 points and 10 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season.

• Davidson knocked off Samford at home in its last contest 63-51 at Belk Arena. The Wildcats erased a three-point halftime deficit by shooting 52.2 percent and outscoring the Bulldogs 37-22 in the second half. They held Samford to just five second-half field goals. Laura Murray had second 20-point outing of the year with an even 20, scoring 14 in the first half.

• Aleksandravicius is enjoying another solid season as she has tallied eight double-doubles and seven in the last eight games. She leads Davidson in scoring average at 14.1 points per game and resides second among SoCon players in rebounding at 9.8 caroms a contest.
