Volleyball Falls To Furman, 3-0

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team could not extend its winning streak Saturday evening, falling in three sets (17-21, 21-25, 21-25) to Furman inside Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans drop to 15-10 overall and 7-5 in Southern Conference play while the Paladins improve to 17-6 and 10-2.

UNCG struggled offensively for most of the night, ending up with a .155 (34k/18e/103ta) hitting percentage. Conversely, Furman hit .303 (46k/13e/109ta) as well as tallying 47 digs, five aces and nine blocks. The Spartans finished with 43 digs, two aces and six blocks.

Senior middle hitters Kelsey Sidney and Vicky Harley led UNCG with eight kills apiece while junior libero Katherine Santiago racked up 13 digs. Harley and sophomore setter Sara Hohman also each picked up three blocks.

The Paladins were fast out of the gates, piling up a 10-2 advantage off the serve of Andrea Fisher. The Spartans used both timeouts early, trailing 6-2 and 13-4, but Furman kept the pressure on and cruised to a 25-17 victory for a 1-0 lead in the match.

A pair of blocks helped the Paladins build an early 3-0 cushion and they would score six of the next 10 points to move in front 9-4 and force a UNCG timeout. The Spartans signaled for another timeout when a kill by Ashton Gregory made the score 15-8. Furman extended its lead to 22-14 before the Blue and Gold scored four straight to pull within four and force a Paladin timeout. The Paladins were able to recover and netted three of the last six points to secure a 25-21 win and head into intermission leading two sets to none.

The third frame was a battle throughout as a block by Harley and Hohman gave UNCG its first lead of the match at 13-12. An attacking error by Fisher kept the Spartans in front 16-15 but Furman went on a 5-2 run to pull in front 20-18. After a UNCG timeout, Fisher committed a service error to keep the Blue and Gold within striking distance. However, the Paladins scored the next three points to put the set out of reach. A kill by Fisher ended the set in Furman's favor 25-21 as the visitors completed the sweep.

UNCG returns to action this Wednesday at 7 p.m., traveling to Spartanburg, S.C. for its second meeting with Wofford. The Spartans beat the Terriers in five sets earlier this season in Greensboro.
