Volleyball Picks Up Key Road Win At Wofford

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After dropping a close first set Wednesday at Wofford, the UNCG volleyball team won the final three frames to snag an important 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18) Southern Conference victory inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.

The Blue and Gold improves to 16-10 overall and 8-5 in conference play with the win while the Terriers drop to 12-17 and 4-8. UNCG also improved to 5-2 in SoCon road matches.

The win was the Spartans 13th straight over the Terriers and completed a season sweep of Wofford after UNCG captured a 3-2 victory earlier in the campaign in Greensboro. The Blue and Gold also moved into sole possession of third place in the SoCon standings, one half match in front of East Tennessee State.

A pair of sophomores, setter Sara Hohman and outside hitter Jessica Brezwyn, tallied double-doubles in the match as Hohman recorded 48 assists and 13 digs while Brezwyn chipped in with 14 kills and 10 digs. Senior middle hitter Vicky Harley led three Spartans in double figures offensively with 19 kills. She committed just four errors in 30 attempts to end up with a .500 hitting percentage. Joining Harley and Brezwyn in double digits was senior middle hitter Kelsey Sidney who contributed 14 kills of her own. Defensively, junior libero Katherine Santiago recorded a match-high 19 digs while Harley netted four blocks.

UNCG out-hit Wofford .263 to .210, remaining undefeated when out-hitting an opponent this season. The Spartans also tallied more kills (60-55), assists (56-52) and digs (70-69) but the Terriers had the edge in blocking with nine to UNCG's seven.

Wofford came out with a lot of energy to begin the match, racking up a 7-2 lead that forced the Spartans to call an early timeout. A bad set by the Terriers made the score 10-7 but a 6-2 Wofford run extended its advantage up to 16-9. UNCG caught fire at that point, going on a 9-4 run to pull within 20-18. A kill by Liz Buterbaugh pushed the Terriers' cushion to 23-20 but the Spartans responded again. A big block by the Spartans ignited a 4-0 run that gave UNCG set point at 24-23, but Wofford came through with a block and two service aces to clinch the frame 26-24.

The Terriers edged out to an 11-8 lead in the second stanza, forcing a Spartan timeout, before a service error by Brezwyn made the score 13-10. UNCG would score the next four points to grab a brief lead but Bella Santoro tied it at 14 with a kill. A kill by Harley and a block by Harley and Hohman afforded UNCG a 16-14 advantage it would not relinquish the rest of the way. A kill from Buterbaugh pulled Wofford within 20-19, but two Terrier errors and a kill by Sidney put the set out of reach. A kill by Harley on an overpass sealed the set for the Spartans by a 25-21 margin.

UNCG navigated through a number of ties and lead changes in the third set to break open a 12-12 deadlock. A 5-0 run capped by a kill from redshirt junior middle hitter Julia Westerbur made the score 17-12 and prompted a Terrier timeout. A huge solo block by Harley seemed to put the stanza away as the Spartans led 22-15, but the home team dug down and drew within 23-21 after a kill by Alex Holland. UNCG took a timeout to settle things down and scored two of the final three points to take the set 25-22.

The Spartans kept the momentum going into set four and charged out to a 9-3 lead on the strength of seven kills. Wofford had to burn its final timeout of the frame when a kill by Harley set the score at 18-10 in favor of the Blue and Gold. The Terriers could not come up with a final answer down the stretch, however, as a service error by Taylor Baird gave UNCG the set by a 25-18 count.

The Blue and Gold returns home Friday, hosting Mercer inside Fleming Gymnasium at 7 p.m. The Spartans defeated the Bears 3-1 in Macon, Ga., all the way back on Sept. 27.
