Women's Soccer Earns 2-2 Draw against NC State

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – After 110 minutes of play, the UNCG women's soccer team tied 2-2 with ACC opponent NC State Sunday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

The Spartans sit at 2-4-2 on the season and the Wolfpack also has an identical 2-4-2 record.

After holding a 2-0 halftime lead, NC State came charging back scoring two second half goals to send the game into overtime.

In the 69th minute, Brittany Stanko crossed a shot into the box where Kayla Saager put a shot on frame but junior goalkeeper Kirsten Glad (Germantown, Md./St. John's College) made the initial save when Saager poked the rebound into the net to cut the lead to 2-1. It was Saager's fourth goal of the season.

Two minutes later, the Wolfpack caught a break as Alexa Allen's shot deflected off a Spartan defender into the goal to tie the game at 2-2. It was Allen's first goal of the season.

The Spartans had a couple of chances in the second half as junior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) received a ball inside the box but her shot attempt went just wide in the 78th minute.

A couple minutes later, Glad made back-to-back saves to keep NC State off the board and keep the game tied. Allen had a shot turned away by Glad in the 79th minute.

With the clock winding down, the Spartans were awarded a free kick in the 86th minute as sophomore Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) fired a shot but Wolfpack keeper Mackenzie Stelljes made the save.

In the first overtime, UNCG had a corner kick that defender Kelsi Peters (Burlington, N.C./Walter M. Williams) found a chance inside the box but her shot just hit the crossbar.

NC State had two golden chances with under a minute left in the overtime but Glad was able to make both saves to keep the game tied 2-2.

In the second overtime, the Wolfpack had two shots but Glad turned away Michell Oestreich with less than two minutes remaining.

UNCG took 11 shots in the game with White leading the way with six attempts. NC State finished with 24 shots, including 21 in the second half and two overtime periods.

Glad, making her first start at UNCG, made eight saves in the contest. Stelljes made four for NC State.

In the first half, the Spartans controlled the possession and quickly jumped out to a lead.
In the eighth minute, UNCG struck first after sophomore defender Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) dribbled in and played a pretty cross to White who tapped in the goal. It was White's fourth goal of the season and gave Brown her first assist.

The Spartans added to their lead after White dribbled past a defender and fired a strike past the keeper for her second goal of the game. White leads the team with five goals in eight games.

UNCG continues its recent homestand by hosting High Point Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
