Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team (6-8-3) returned home for the first time since September 27 Friday night and what a homecoming it was. The Spartans defeated Mercer (3-7-5) 1-0 to improve to 6-8-3 overall and jump past the Bears in the league standings. With two games remaining in the regular season, UNCG is 4-2-1 in league action while Mercer falls to 3-2-1.
Caylin Prillaman (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) gave the Spartans the 1-0 lead with a header in the 30th minute. Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) burst past three Bears defenders and took a shot f rom just outside the box where Prillaman would connect to find the back of the net propelling the Spartans to a first half lead.
UNCG held a 6-3 advantage in shots in the opening frame while Mercer took a pair of corner kicks to the Spartans one.
The Bears made a strong offensive push in the second half but UNCG held them scoreless. The Spartans fired off another six shots while Mercer took four. Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) made three saves in the game while Mercer's goalkeeper Maggie Cropp made five, three of which game in the final 45 minutes.
The Spartans return to the pitch Sunday, October 18, when they host The Citadel at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. and live video will be available on the SoCon Digital Network.
