Volleyball Picks Up 21st Win Of The Year With 3-1 Win At Wofford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team moved into a tie for second place in the Southern Conference standings Friday night as the Spartans posted a 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16) victory over hosting Wofford. The victory improves the Spartans to 21-9 on the year and 11-4 in SoCon play.

UNCG is now tied for second place with Furman, who the Spartans play in the final match of the regular season Saturday night. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start in Greenville, S.C., but will not be broadcast on the SoCon Digital Network. A win in the final match of the year would lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament.

The Spartans were strong offensively in the victory, hitting at a .303 clip in the match, including a .405 rate in the first set. UNCG tallied 60 kills in the four-set win while only posting 16 attack errors. The Spartans were strong on the defensive end holding Wofford to just a .124 hitting percentage, forcing the Terriers into 25 attack errors. UNCG also tallied 76 digs in the victory with four different players in double-figure digs.

Sophomore Ashley Muench (Hurdle Mills, N.C./Orange) led the charge with a team-high 14 kills while also adding 15 digs. Redshirt freshman Jasmine Jones (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) added 11 kills and six blocks as she hit .318 on the night. Fellow middle Julia Westerbur (College Station, Texas/SMU) connected at a .562 hitting percentage on her way to 10 kills on just 16 swings.

Junior outside hitter Jessica Brezwyn (Darien, Ill./Hillsdale South) rounded out four Spartans in double figure kills with 10 on the night. Senior Katherine Santiago (San Juan, Puerto Rico) posted a match-high 17 digs in the victory while freshman setter Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) posted 47 assists and 11 kills. Alex Holland's led Wofford (15-17, 6-9 SoCon) with 15 kills while Jessica Graham posted 17 digs in the loss.

The first set was the closest set of the night with the teams battling back-and-forth before being tied at 19-19. The Terriers posted a 5-1 run to take a 24-20 lead on Holland's serve. Jones kept the Spartans in the set with back-to-back kills before Bella Santoro ended the set with a kill. Alexis Mourier (Elkview, W.Va./Davis & Elkins) paced UNCG in the first set with five kills while Holland posted four kills in the set one win.

The two teams continued their back-and-forth battle in set two with UNCG holding a 9-7 lead. The Spartans broke the game open with a 13-4 run to take a 22-11 win and easily rolled to the victory. UNCG controlled the net in the second set, posting five blocks and also scored four points on service aces, including back-to-back aces by Christina Gregory (Louisville, Ky.)

The third set saw Wofford jump out to a 16-12 lead before the Spartans flipped the script with an 8-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. Brezwyn and Westerbur each tallied a pair of kills in the spurt. Wofford kept battling and pulled within one at 21-20, but UNCG closed out the match with a 4-0 run as Muench and Brezwyn recorded kills.

UNCG ended the four-set victory with a 7-3 run early on and capped the win with an 8-2 run to close. Brezwyn was the catalyst for the first run with a pair of kills before Muench and Jones put a cap on the victory with two kills each on the game-deciding set.
