Box Score Greenville, S.C. – The UNCG women's soccer season came to an end on Friday night in a 2-1 loss to No. 2 Furman in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals. The Spartans finish the season 9-9-3 overall as Furman improves to 16-4-1 and will face Mercer (9-7-4) in the SoCon Finals Sunday, November 8.
UNCG took an early 1-0 lead just ten minutes to play when Candice Forbes (Pleasant Garden, N.C./Southeast Guilford) sent a cross from the right side to fellow senior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) who connected for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. The two teams would exchange shots as the clock ticked but the Spartans held on to a one-goal lead at halftime. Furman outshot UNCG 4-2 in the opening half while Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) made two saves in goal for the Spartans.
In a very physical second half, UNCG held its lead until the final ten minutes of regulation when a Stephanie DeVita header off a Paladins' corner kick to even the game 1-all. As the clock expired it appeared that it would be the second semifinal game heading to overtime of the day but a last second shot by DeVita that lofted over Buehler's head from 23-yards out. The Spartans keeper was just out of reach as the Paladins bench celebrated the go-ahead goal with five seconds remaining.
Furman edged UNCG 9-6 in second-half shots and 13-8 overall. Buehler tallied six saves in the loss, four of which came in the final 45 minutes.
Prior to Friday night's loss, the Spartans were 8-0 this season in games in which they scored first.
The Spartans graduate six seniors including All-SoCon selections White, Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) and Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) but return SoCon Freshman of the Year Caylin Prillaman (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy).
