Women's Basketball Tops Century Mark in 103-56 Rout of North Carolina Central

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG's women's basketball team came one point shy of matching a program record for points scored in a game during the Division I era with a 103-56 win over North Carolina Central (1-10, 1-1 MEAC) in a New Year's Eve matinee Thursday afternoon. The Spartans improve their win-streak to three games and finish the non-conference season with a winning record, 8-7, for the first time since the 2000-01 season.

The team-high record 103 points was the only mark UNCG made in the history books though, the Spartans shot an impressive 66.1 percent from the field (41-for-62) to set a single-game Division I era (Since 1991) record. The 47-point margin also ranks third best in program history.

UNCG jumped out to an early 13-0 lead as the Eagles shot 0-for-9 on their first attempts. It all began seconds into the game when Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) drained a three-pointer for the opening basket. At 5:06 NCCU got on the board with a layup by Tisha Dixon, who led the Eagles with a team-best 18 points in the loss. UNCG never looked back and ran off to lead 27-11 in the first quarter. The Spartans carried their tempo into the second quarter outscoring North Carolina Center 24-10 to lead by 30, 51-21, at halftime.

Backed by 11 points from Southern Conference leading scorer Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter), the Spartans shot 67.7 percent from the field in the first half and a perfect four-for-four from behind the arc. UNCG edged NCCU 17-16 and held the Eagles to just 20.7 percent from the field in the half.

The second half was no different as UNCG pulled ahead by 40 points just three minutes into action when Jade Scaife (Fort Washington, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) connected on a three-point play after being fouled by Dominique Adams. UNCG scored 16 points in the paint in the third quarter and outscored North Carolina Central 29-17. The Spartans entered the final frame with a 42-point lead. The two teams exchanged baskets down the stretch, as the Eagles were unable to chip away at the deficit. UNCG took its largest lead, 47, with under a minute to play and held on for a 46-point win.

Scaife went off in the second half, scoring 16 points on seven-of-six from the field. She was a key contributor in UNCG's 64.5 field goal percentage while Mason shot three-for-four from downtown and added 11 points.

The tandem both recorded 20-point games becoming the first Spartan duo to do so since Lucy Mason and Jarae Savage did so in the 2014-15 regular season finale. Scaife flirted with breaking her career-record but settled for matching it with 24 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead all scorers. Mason added 22 points, six rebounds and six assists while Shanese Harris (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) tied her season-high with 18 points, seven rebounds and career-best and game-high seven assists.

All 11 Spartans that saw floor time scored in the victory in an all-around team effort. India Timpton (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and Williams also added ten points each as five players scored in double figures. UNCG's bench accounted for 41 of its points while 25 points where scored off of fast breaks.

UNCG has a week's rest to prepare for Southern Conference play, which begins January 7, when the Spartans host Mercer at 7 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
