Box Score

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team went on the road for the first time in the 2015 season and suffered a 2-0 loss to Triad rival High Point Sunday night at Vert Stadium. The Spartans return to action next Friday night when they travel to No. 16 Kentucky for a 5 p.m. start.

The Spartans started quickly as they had a chance off the opening kick, springing senior Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) behind the HPU defense. White's shot against the on-charging HPU goalkeeper Alex Persiani was saved just 15 seconds into the game.

High Point struck first in the 30th minute of action. Meredith Dunker made a run down the left-hand side and sent a cross to the top of the six-yard box. Michele Micciche got in front of the UNCG defender and made a diving header that got past redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) for the 1-0 lead.

The Spartans started to put extra pressure on in the final 10 minutes of the second half. Senior Ashley Eddleman (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) had a chance off a corner kick in the 80th minute, but her header was saved by Persiani. UNCG kept attacking and junior Melanie Formosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe) sent a ball through the defense where it found senior Candice Forbes (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford). Forbes got behind the defense and was one-on-one against Persiani, but her shot sailed just over the cross bar.

The Spartans were pushing for the game-tying goal but in the process allowed High Point to score a much-needed insurance goal in the 88th minute off a counter attack. Dunker again played a role in the goal as she sent a cross into the six-yard box where Meghan Beidleman was able to poke it past Buehler for the 2-0 advantage.

The Spartans hit the road next week for a pair of games in the Bluegrass State, beginning Friday night at Southeastern Conference foe No. 16 Kentucky at 5 p.m.
