Men's Basketball Rallies Past Wofford With Big Second Half Effort

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team rallied from as many as 10 down as the Spartans came from behind to defeat Southern Conference perennial power Wofford 65-61 Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum. The Spartans out-scored the Terriers 41-29 in the second half to earn their first home win over Wofford since 2013.

The victory snapped the Spartans three-game skid while ending Wofford's four-game winning streak as UNCG improves to 6-8 in league play while the Terriers fall to 10-5 in conference action. The win, coupled with Western Carolina's loss at ETSU, moves the Spartans into a tie for sixth place in the league standings with four games remaining in the year. The top six teams in the regular season earn first round byes in the SoCon Tournament in Asheville.

Junior guard Diante Baldwin (Greensboro, N.C./High Point Christian) paced four in double figures with a game-high 21 points while also grabbing nine rebounds. Baldwin finished the night shooting 9-of-13 from the field as the Spartans connected on 49 percent (25-of-51) from the field in the victory. UNCG also held the Terriers to just 37.3 percent (22-of-59) shooting from the field and even more impressive limited Wofford to just 23.1 percent (6-of-26) shooting from distance. The Terriers entered the game fifth in the nation in 3-point shooting, connecting on 41.7 percent entering the game.

Sophomore forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) also fell just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. UNCG out-rebounded the Terriers by a 35-31 margin, including a 20-11 edge in the second half. Freshman guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) added 13 points and four assists while senior forward Kayel Locke (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) chipped in 11 points in the victory.

Wofford (14-14, 10-5 SoCon) had three in double figures in the loss. Fletcher Magee led the way with 15 points while Jaylen Allen and CJ Neumann each added 10 points. Spencer Collins, the Terriers' leading scorer, was held to just four points on 2-of-10 shooting.

The teams came out of the gate slowly in the first half with Wofford taking an early 12-5 lead on an Allen 3-pointer. Baldwin pulled the Spartans within three at 22-19 as he hit a free throw but the Terriers tallied a 10-3 run to take a 32-22 lead with eight seconds remaining in the first half. Alonso narrowed the halftime deficit to eight at 32-24 as he hit a floater as time expired in the opening half.

UNCG connected on just 36 percent (9-of-25) from the field in the first half and just 2-of-11 (18.2%) from distance. The Spartans also committed six turnovers in the half while only handing out two assists. Wofford conversely connected on 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from the field and out-rebounded the Spartans by a 20-15 margin, including seven on the offensive end.

The Spartans (10-17, 6-8 SoCon) came out of the halftie break and scored the first seven points to narrow the gap to one at 32-31. UNCG kept its foot on the pedal, turning that spurt into a 15-2 open to the second half, taking a 39-34 lead with 14:20 remaining.

Baldwin was the offensive force during the run, scoring eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field in the opening 5:40 of the second half. Wofford responded to the run with seven straight points by Eric Garcia to tie the game at 45-45 with 7:13 remaining in the half.

The Terriers would take a 49-48 lead as a jumper by Neumann but UNCG answered back with a 10-2 run to take a 58-51 lead with 2:44 left. Locke started the run by converting an old-fashioned 3-point play to give the Spartans back the lead for good. Alonso scored five straight to cap the run, including a 3-pointer from the win for the seven-point advantage.

Wofford tried to make a push down the stretch in the final two minutes but UNCG had an answer for each basket while hitting just enough from the charity stripe to secure the 65-61 victory. The Spartans finished the second half shooting 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the field while limiting Wofford to just 34.6 percent (9-of-26) shooting from the field and only 2-of-13 (15.4%) from distance.

UNCG hits the road for the final time this season as the Spartans travel to Birmingham, Ala., Thursday for a meeting with Samford. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (ET) and will be aired on ESPN3 and the ESPN App.
