Baseball Set for Annual Matchup at NewBridge Bank Park

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Baseball team is set for its annual matchup with the North Carolina A&T Aggies at NewBridge Bank Park on Tuesday evening.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., and the event will be free with tickets available at the gate.  There will be not be a broadcast of the game, but live stats will be available via a link on uncgspartans.com.

UNCG enters the contest sporting a 15-5 record, while A&T is currently 4-17 on the year.  The Spartans have won six of their last seven games and are fresh off a three-game sweep over Marist at the UNCG Baseball Stadium over the weekend. 

The Spartans and Aggies have met 47 times since 1991.  UNCG holds a 41-6 advantage during that time.  The Spartans have won eight of the last 10 meetings, with four of these games being played at the NewBridge Bank Park, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.  The tradition of playing one game at NewBridge Bank Park started in 2006, a year after the park opened.  UNCG has gone 7-1 in games played at the neutral site, with Head Coach Link Jarrett going 2-0 in his three seasons at the helm.

UNCG is fresh off a three-game sweep of the Marist Red Foxes and have now won six of their last seven games since dropping two in a row to Army and UNCW.  Against the Red Foxes, The Spartans combined for 40 runs over three games. Over the three game series, UNCG connected for six home runs, including three home runs in the Friday night matchup.  Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) has connected for a team-high five home runs, and has driven in 27 RBI on the season, including eight over the last three games.  Over every weekend series this season, UNCG has connected for 40+ hits, including a 53 hit weekend against Marist.

UNCG's offense is among the best in the nation, as the team has a combined batting average of .370, good for the top spot in Division I.  UNCG comes in as the top-dog in several other categories, including doubles, doubles per game, hits, slugging percentage as well as on-base percentage.  The Spartan offense scores on average, 9.4 runs per game, good for second in the nation behind BYU and have scored 187 runs through 20 games played.

Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) has been the catalyst of the Spartan offense, hitting in the lead off position for 14 games.  Spitznagel has earned a .429 batting average, has seven extra-base hits to go with 19 runs scored, eight RBI and is tied for the team lead with six stolen bases.  L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) is second among every day starters for the UNCG offense.  The redshirt senior has a .408 average through 18 games and hit his first home run as a Spartan over the weekend.  Woody has been a mainstay in the middle of the lineup.  The senior third baseman has a .398 average and leads the team with five home runs, 27 RBI and is tied with Tripp Shelton (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Forsyth) for the top spot on the squad with eight doubles.

The Spartans are set to send Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) to the hill Tuesday evening.  Lewis has started two games prior to Tuesday's game.  The freshman southpaw started against NC State at Doak Field on Mar. 1st before kicking off the Coastal Carolina Invitational against Illinois on Mar. 11th.  In 15.1 innings of work, Lewis has struck out 16 hitters and has earned a 4.11 ERA.  UNCG relies on a pair of sophomores out of the bullpen.  Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) has appeared in 11 of 20 games, all out of the bullpen.  Wantz has thrown the second-most innings on the team at 29.1 and has struck out the most hitters, 38.  In his 29.1 innings, Wantz has held opponents to a .178 average against him and has earned one save to go with his 2-0 record.  Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) has nailed down several games for the Spartans in the final innings.  Sykes as a 1-1 record and a team-high two saves in his 10 outings.  Sykes has worked a total of 14.0 innings, struck out 15 hitters and has held opponents to a .152 average against. 

North Carolina A&T enters the midweek game with a 4-17 overall record.  The Aggies have dropped six-straight, and 10 of their last 11.  Over the last four games, North Carolina A&T has allowed an average of 13.5 runs per game, during that time. 

The Aggie offense has hit for a .278 average in their 21 games.  Ryan Jantsch leads the A&T offense with a .459 average in ten games.  The senior outfielder has connected for five doubles and two home runs while driving in 12 runs.  Jantsch also leads the Aggies with a .757 slugging percentage.  Timothy Ravare and Milton Rivera are two regulars that have continued to produce for the Aggies.  Ravare, a junior infielder has amassed a .338 average with a triple and five doubles while scoring 10 runs.  Rivera, a sophomore infielder, has a .325 average through his 21 starts.  Rivera also leads the Aggies with five home runs on the season, to go with three doubles.  Kyle Clary, Keenan Herring, Adan Ordonez are all tied for the team-lead in RBI.  The trio have driven in 15 runs each, with Herring connecting for two home runs during the season.

North Carolina A&T has a staff ERA of 8.95 through 182.0 innings of work.  The Aggies have given up 181 earned runs so far this year, and have struck out 136.  Teams are also batting .316 against the Aggies pitching staff.  There have been five starters during NC A&T's midweek games.  KJ McCalister is 0-1 in six appearances, with one start.  B Smith has started two midweek games this season, going 0-2 in his six appearances.  Smith has an 11.74 ERA in 15.1 innings and has struck out eight hitters.  Danny Garrett leads the Aggies in appearances, making 12 through 21 games.  Garrett has made one start and has earned an 8.85 ERA in 20.1 innings and is second on the team with 22 strikeouts on the season. Matt Stanley has the lowest ERA of all the Aggie pitchers, earning a 5.52 mark in his 14.2 innings of work. Stanley has recorded an 0-2 record and has allowed nine earned runs while on the bump.
