GREENSBORO, N.C. – Spartan Baseball is will head to Elon, N.C. for its ninth game away from home in its last ten contests. UNCG and Elon will play a midweek matchup on Wednesday evening at Latham Park at 6:30 p.m.. This the second trip to Latham Park since the 2012 season, as UNCG hosted Elon in the final two Southern Conference series before Elon make the switch to the Colonial Athletic Association.

The Spartans earned a series victory over the Furman Paladins in their last outing. UNCG fell 9-7 in the Friday matchup, before flexing their muscle on Saturday and Sunday. The Spartans recorded an 18-11 victory Saturday, and 14-0 in seven innings on Sunday to take the series.
Currently, the UNCG offense currently leads the NCAA with a .362 team batting average. Louisville and Texas A&M are currently battling for second, but trail by an impressive 27 points. UNCG also leads the NCAA in scoring (9.4), runs (357), hits (503), doubles per game(2.66), doubles (101), triples (23), slugging percentage (.551), sacrifice flies (29)and on-base percentage (.443).
UNCG has connected for at least 38 hits in every weekend since the start of the season. UNCG has also knocked out 10 or more hits in 28 of 38 games played so far this season, including going for 20+ in five games. The Spartans have had 20+ hit games 10 times in the 24 year history of the program, prior to this year.
The Spartans have three players hitting above .400 this season, the most of any NCAA Division I team. Ben Spitznagel leads the team with a .432 average after an impressive 13-for-15 performance in three games against the Furman Paladins. Freshman Andrew Moritz leads all SoCon freshman with a .412 average, good for fourth in the league behind Spitznagel.
Kalawaia also hits above the .400 mark, at .408. The redshirt senior has driven in 49 runs this year, scored 46, hit for extra bases 14 times, including five home runs.
Collin Woody leads the Spartans with 50 RBI this year. UNCG has six players who have driven in at least 32 runs this year, the most of any Southern Conference team. UNCG has four players in the top 51 of RBI producers, the most of any NCAA Division I institution.
UNCG has nine players hitting above the .300 plateau who have played in at least 22 games this season.
The Spartans will send freshman Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) to the hill Wednesday. Lewis has started four other midweek games this season, as well as appearing in 14 total games. The one start that was not a midweek game, came in the Coastal Carolina Invitational when he opened the tournament with a start against the Illinois Fighting Illini. In his last outing, Lewis worked 5.1 innings against Wake Forest, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out four hitters. Lewis has earned a 1-0 record with a 5.08 ERA in 33.2 innings this season. He is also fifth on the team with 34 strikeouts this year.
The Spartans and Phoenix have met 49 times over the history of UNCG Baseball. Elon holds a 33-15 record in that time, with the majority of games coming when Elon and UNCG were both members of the Southern Conference. UNCG is 4-5 against the Phoenix under head coach Link Jarrett. In two midweek games a year ago, UNCG was swept by Elon. After taking the first midweek game this season, the Spartans look to return the favor by grabbing another victory on Wednesday.
Elon enters the contest with UNCG with a 15-21 overall record. The Phoenix have gone 7-7 in Colonial Athletic Association. After dropping the first five games of the season, including one to UNCG, Elon was able to rebound and win eight of its next 11 games, including seven at home. Elon is coming off of a three-game weekend sweep over Towson prior to taking on the High Point Panthers on Tuesday evening, and the Spartans on Wednesday.
The Phoenix have a .258 team average and are led by Tyler McVicar. McVicar has played in 35 games this season, and has put together a .305 average during that span. The senior infielder has hit for extra-bases 15 times and has driven in 22 runs. Kyle Jackson is a key contributor to the Phoenix offense. Jackson has played in 36 games and leads the team with nine home runs. The junior outfielder has hit for a .299 average with 14 doubles on the year. He also leads the team with 31 RBI this year and 32 runs scored. Jackson has also been a threat on the bases, swiping a team-high nine this season. Another player to watch in the Phoenix lineup is Nick Zammarelli. Zammarelli, a utility fielder, has hit for a .273 average but has left the yard five times. He also leads Elon with 16 doubles this season and is even in the runs and RBI categories, at 27 for each.
Sean Byrnes is schedule to start for Elon on Wednesday. Byrnes has worked in 13 games this year, including one start. The sophomore's last start came almost a month prior, starting a midweek game on Mar. 16th against the North Carolina Tar Heels. In that game, Byrnes went 1.1 innings, allowed five hits, five earned runs and struck out three hitters. In his last outing, Byrnes worked against NC State, coming on in relief of Robbie Welhaf. Byrnes relief started in the first inning as the Elon starter was unable to record an out. Byrnes then worked 3.1 innings, allowed five hits, four earned runs and struck out a pair. Chris Hall has served as the Elon closer this season, making 16 appearances and earning eight saves in the process. When Hall makes an appearance, Elon is 11-5, with Hall himself earning a 2-1 record. The junior reliever has worked a total of 24.0 innings in 16 outings, including a season-high 4.0 at Northeastern on April 10th. Kellan Elsbury, Danny Crowe and Dimitri Lettas have combined for 25 appearances this year. Elsbury has the lowest ERA at 3.75 in his 12.0 innings, with one strikeout for every appearance.
