Baseball to Host Campbell in Final Home Midweek Contest

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG Baseball will host the Campbell Camels in the last home midweek game of the season.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.  The Spartans enter with a 31-11 record and are currently receiving votes in the National College Baseball Writers Association Top 30 poll.  Campbell is 22-19 on the year. Tomorrow is also Dollar Dog night.  All hot dogs at the concession stand will be available for only one dollar. 

The game will be broadcasted on the SoCon Digital Network with Luke Martin on the call.  If unable to attend the game, fans can follow @UNCGScores on Twitter for in-game updates, and follow @UNCGBaseball to stay up to date will all UNCG Baseball happenings. 

The Spartans completed a three-game sweep of the East Tennessee State Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon.  UNCG defeated ETSU 6-5 on Friday, 13-6 on Saturday before rallying late and winning 9-7 on Sunday.  The Spartans combined for 33 hits on the weekend.  The series sweeps marks the fifth series sweep this season. 

The UNCG offense continues to lead the NCAA with a .361 team batting average.  The Spartans have led the NCAA in that category since Mar. 8th.  Louisville and Texas A&M are currently battling for second, but trail by an impressive 30 points.  UNCG also leads the NCAA in scoring, runs, hits, doubles, slugging percentage, sacrifice flies and on-base percentage. 

UNCG has connected for at least 38 hits in all but one weekend since the start of the season.  UNCG has also knocked out 10 or more hits in 31 of 42 games played so far this season, including going for 20+ in five games.  The Spartans have had 20+ hit games 10 times in the 24 year history of the program, prior to this year.

The Spartans have two players hitting above .400 this season, the most of any NCAA Division I team.  Ben Spitznagel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wabash Valley CC) leads the team with a .420 average.  Spitznagel leads the NCAA with 73 hits this season, as he has had multiple hits in 24 games this year.  UNCG has four players in the top 20 in the NCAA's hits category. 

L.J. Kalawaia (Wailuku, Hawai'i/Ohlone College) has had a tremendous final season at UNCG.  The redshirt senior has hit for a .395 average, with 15 extra-base hits.  He has driven in 51 runs this year, scored 52, while leading the team with 19 stolen bases. 

Collin Woody (Tampa, Fla./College of Central Florida) leads the Spartans with 57 RBI this season.  UNCG has six players who have driven in at least 32 runs this year, the most of any Southern Conference team.  UNCG has four players in the top 26 of RBI producers, the most of any NCAA Division I institution. 

Bryce Hensley (Asheville, N.C./Catawba Valley CC) will start his tenth game of the season on Tuesday afternoon.  Hensley worked as the Saturday starter for the first nine weekends of the year, going 4-1 in those starts.  Hensley has logged five starts of at least 6.0 innings pitched, going 3-0 in those games.  His season-high for strikeouts in a game is eight.  The Spartan bullpen has five players who have appeared in at least 13 games this year. 

Andrew Wantz (Holly Springs, N.C./Holly Springs) has appeared in a team-high 22 games and leads UNCG with 69 strikeouts on the year.  Chad Sykes (Creedmoor, N.C./Voyager Academy) has appeared in 20 games, while earning SoCon Pitcher of the Month in Marc.  Sykes earned the win in UNCG's series finale with ETSU over the weekend.  Sykes also leads the team with four saves on the year.  Ben Kerner (Cary, N.C./Brunswick CC) has appeared in 18 games,  earning a 3-0 record.  Jake Lewis (Wendell, N.C./Corinth Holders) has appeared in 15 games, while starting six.  Lewis has struck out 35 hitters in 35.0 innings.  Woody has worked as a two-way player, appearing in 13 games this year.  Woody has earned one save with a 2-2 record in 18.1 innings pitched. 

Campbell and UNCG have played nine games over the years, with the Spartans earning a 6-4 advantage in that time.  In the first four years of UNCG baseball, the Spartans and Camels faced each other seven times, with UNCG going 5-2 in those games.  Over the last seven years, UNCG and Campbell have played three times, with UNCG taking the most recent game. Link Jarrett is 1-1 against Campbell, having lost in 2014 before winning the game in Buies Creek earlier this season. 

The Camels enter the contest with a 22-19 record on the year.  Campbell is 6-4 in their last ten games, including winning two of their last three games in Farmville, Va. against Longwood.  Campbell suffered a 14-7 loss in their last midweek contest to UNCW.  In midweek games this season, the Camels are a combined 5-6 including a loss the UNCG in Buies Creek on Mar. 30th. 

The Campbell offense is paced by Matt Parrish.  The senior catcher leads the Camels with a .368 batting average in 37 games this season.  Parrish has driven in a team-high 34 runs on 15 extra-base hits.  Drew Butler and Anthony Lopez have been key contributors to the Camel offense.  Lopez has a .335 average in 39 games this season.  Lopez has scored 32 runs to go with 15 extra-base hits,, including a team-high five triples.  Butler has a .333 average in 36 games, with only three extra-base hits.  Brian Taylor has provided the thump in the Camel lineup, connecting for five home runs, most in the lineup.  Ben Calvano has been a threat on the base paths all season, going 16-for-18 in stolen bases this year. 

Wes Nobel is set to start the contest on Tuesday evening.  The sophomore right-hander has appeared in ten games with five starts.  In his 35.0 innings, he has fanned 37 hitters while earning a 1-2 record with a 4.37 ERA.  Nobel started the midweek game between UNCG and Campbell earlier this season, throwing 4.0 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.  In his last outing, the righty went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, four earned and struck out six batters.  Erik Dowse has acted as the closer for Campbell.  Dowse has earned a 1.22 ERA in 19 appearances.  In his 37.0 innings, The junior right-hander has struck out 50 batters and has earned three saves, while earning a 2-1 record and a 1.22 ERA.  Phil Stokes and Tyson Messer are the only other two Camels that have appeared in at least 10 games.  Stokes has earned a 6.60 ERA in 15.0 innings.  Messer has logged 13 appearances, with two starts.  He has earned a 10.89 ERA in 20.2 innings, allowing 25 earned runs.
