Spartans Blanked by William & Mary Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's soccer team (3-4-1) suffered a 2-0 loss to William & Mary (5-2) at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans will have a quick turnaround as they travel to No. 15 South Carolina Thursday night in Columbia, S.C.

Despite a first half full of even possession William & Mary was able to take a 2-0 lead. Sami Grasso scored on a short shot with a double assist from Mackenzie Kober and Claire Robbins in the 26th minute. Less than four minutes later Rachel Moore scored when Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) charged her way to stop a misplayed pass. Moore was able to poke a shot into the bottom left of the net for a 2-0 lead.

UNCG was slightly edged 9-6 in shots in the first half but held a small 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Both Buehler and the Tribe's goalkeeper Grace Smith made three saves in the opening stanza.

William & Mary's pressure continued through the second half as the Tribe outshout UNCG 7-1. Buehler picked up three more saves in the match while UNCG once again had the advantage in corner kicks 3-1.

Buehler made a pair of back-to-back saves in the 58th minute, which kept The College from adding another number to the scoreboard.

William & Mary leads the all-time series 4-3 and earned just its second victory at the UNCG Soccer Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Tribe's first was in 1999 when the two squads met for the very first time.

UNCG's three-match losing streak is just the second since head coach Michael Coll took over the program in 2014. The Spartans, who have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the Southern League, will face No. 15 South Carolina (6-0-1) on the road Thursday in Columbia, S.C., before heading to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina in the final non-conference game of the season.

The Spartans return home Friday, September 30, for their first home match of the SoCon season when they host Wofford at 7 p.m.

The UNCG women's soccer alumni weekend is set for October 21-23 during Homecoming Weekend. To register for Alumni Weekend contact Spartan Club Assistant Director Rachael Farlow at rkfarlow@uncg.edu or 336-334-5156. The deadline to RSVP is October 17.
